ALI HASSAN KUBAN NUBIAN MAGIC MCR7003-2 CD £ 12.00
Ali Hassan Kuban was the region's foremost musical ambassador, with his soulful, impassioned sound and lyrics that mostly deal with love. His Nubian Band mixed elements of traditional and contemporary music forms seamlessly, using guitar, electric bass, and horns in conjunction with the Arabic oud, the Nubian lyre, and traditional Middle Eastern percussion. His music is notable not only for its aesthetic beauty and undeniable visceral power, but also for its ability to incorporate the ancient influences of his native land without being limited by them. This is thoroughly modern music for modern times, as the two dance mixes at the end of the disc will attest.

ALI HASSAN KUBAN WALK LIKE A NUBIAN CDPIR432 CD £ 12.00
In Egypt a wedding singer doesn't just perform at the reception - he brings the party. In the case of the late Ali Hassan Kuban, those celebrations lasted for days, which might explain why he was a Cairo favourite and even performed at the wedding of Egypt's president. After the mysterious Egyptian Funk blast of his first European release 'From Nubia to Cairo' made its indelible mark on the world music scene, the man himself set out on tour. The sparkling percussion, driving electric bass and groovy horns of his dynamic ensemble laid down a new set of instant classics. His band has roots in tradition, but funk it up and pack the dance floor with music that forces the feet to move. If the rifferama bass doesn't get you, then the percussion will. Even when Kuban slows it down soul still oozes from every note. Slinky, muscular and absolutely irresistible, it's ancient funk with modern power.

EGYPTIAN SHAABI ALL-STARS STREET MUSIC OF CAIRO HMC1395 CD £ 0.00
Shaabi music originated in the restive urban culture of the streets of Cairo. It was like a revolution – it could be heard in every shop, taxicab, restaurant and home, and spread like wildfire because it was danceable pop music that gave listeners a chance to vent their feelings about love, romance, money, dreams, or anything worth longing for. It helped the joyous revel and celebrate life… and those who were down on their luck or victims of the pitfalls of urban life were able to find solitude in this new style of music. "Street Music of Cairo," presented by The Egyptian Shaabi All-Stars, is a collection of lively, high-energy songs for listening or dancing. If you put Egyptian Shaabi All-Stars into Google it only finds this album and it appears to be a compilation by various uncredited artists. Very nice though......... 1. ORGOS

EL TANBURA FRIENDS OF BAMBOUTE 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION FOB1869 CD £ 10.00
The band El Tanbura was formed in 1989 by Zakaria Ibrahim composed of veteran Egyptian master musicians, singers, fishermen and philosophers who all lived in Port Said. They were the custodians of some of Egypt's oldest folk melodies. This CD was released in 2009 as they celebrated their 20th anniversary with a collection of songs recounting tales of the 19th century Bambutiyya merchants who frequented the old-time Cafes and hashish dens along the path of the Suez Canal. Also included are some devotional Sufi songs from the Egyptian Delta. In 1996 the group's reputation had spread and a tour to France resulted in their first international CD, La Simsimiyya de Port Said. A second CD Between the Desert and the Sea (named by Songlines Magazine as one of the all-time Top 50 world music albums) followed in 2006. Hussein el-Masry was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1952 and is a virtuoso oud player, composer and singer. He studied at the Institute of Arab Music in Cairo. In 1977 he moved to Paris and has released numerous modern Egyptian music albums. Very different to what you would normally expect from Egypt and in fact I would go so far as to say that this is a remarkably beautiful and innovative album. So do please have a listen and I think you will have to agree. CD comes complete with 28 page booklet about the artist and the songs.

MONA ABDEL GHANI AYWA LAKEN MAG-AL TC £ 15.00
Multi talented singer, actress and TV presenter Mona began her career as a singer in the music group The Friends with Mu'tazila singer Hanan, Alaa Abdel-Khaleq and musician Ammar Al-Sharie'i in the early 80's. Her first solo release was Ashab which made her instantly famous. She is a graduate of the Institute of Arab Music - Academy of Arts and has many films and TV shows also to her credit. I couldn't find this particular album anywhere on the web although tracks 1, 2 and 5 are from her Sahranen album. The other five tracks I could not find on any of the other albums or compilations listed so this is a rather rare item by the look of it. I would describe it as Egyptian pop but whatever it is tracks 2, 6 and 7 went straight into my computer juke box. Has been sat in my collection unplayed for over 30 years.

RANGO BRIDE OF THE ZAR HOR21948 CD £ 12.00
The debut album from mystical North African ensemble Rango. Led by Hassan Bergamon, the last surviving player of the ancient rango xylophone, this Cairo-based band of Sudanese and Egyptian musicians play a mix of ceremonial healing Zar music, hip quaking Nubian wedding melodies, soldiers' marching chants, songs of love, songs of depression, songs of joy and tales of the mischievous Lady Racosha and the blood-sucking Spirit King, Master Manjoo. Hassan plays a 190 year old rango xylophone with gourd resonators that are supposed to channel the spirits. The ensemble also uses the simsimiyya and tanbura lyres, shakers made from recycled aerosol cans, a mangor belt (made from goats' toe-nails) and the percussion instrument called a keria which is actually a block of railway line! The instruments might be ancient or made from junk, but the musicianship (under the direction of Zakaria Ibrahim) is masterly and the whole album beautifully produced by Michael Whitewood. Comes with a 24 page booklet crammed with photos and background material on the songs and instruments. 1. SAWAKIN

SALAMAT MAMBO EL SOUDANI CDPIR312 CD £ 10.00
The last mambo in Sudan: Ever since the Assuan dam flooded the home country of the Nubian culture, the Nubian community has been forced to occupy both sides of the Egyptian-Sudan border and has been scattered in the diaspora. The group Salamat brings together traditions which had been affiliated for thousands of years but separated through recent history and transport the sound of the Nubian minority to the teeming Cairo metropolis with soulful brasses and fascinating polyrhythmic. Mambo El Soudani is a new dimension in Nubian music. Recorded and mixed in Cairo this original Piranha release features first time ever Nubian Al Jeel Music stars Salamat, formed by Mahmoud Fadl with Hassan Meky and Ahmed El Saidy of Ali Hassan Kubans Nubian Band and Fathi Abou Greisha and Salma Abd Rady on lead vocals. Al Jeel (the music of the young generation) at its best and proof of those old words from The Stories of 1001 Nights: On entering paradise you may hear the sound of nightingales and Nubian singers ...

SALAMAT MEET LES MUSICIENS DU NIL SALAM DELTA CDPIR0936 CD £ 10.00
After the success of Salamats debut record in their second original Piranha release Salamat joins forces with legendary Musiciens du Nil for a celebration of the musical cosmos created under the bright lights of Cairo. Featured singers are Metqal, grandfather of the Saisi musical tradition, Nubian wedding animatrice Salma and Arab teenage-star Ahmed Fathy while gypsy brass genius Ferus Mustafov spontaneously decided to join in for some overdubs. Top worldwide music producer Hijaz Mustapha brought it all together. I must admit that listening to the first couple of minutes as the orchestra tuned up their instruments I thought I am not going to like this at all. Then all hell broke loose into pure magic and if you don't beleive me then have a listen to the clip from track 7 which just blew me away after a somewhat quiet intro.

SHEIKH AHMAD AL-TUNI THE SULTAN OF ALL MUNSHIDIN (2 x CD) 306097-2 CDx2 £ 20.00
Ahmad Al-Tuni came from the village of Hawatka, near Assiout, and was one of the last great munshidin (singers of the instad dini, the islamic sacred song or hymn) of Upper Egypt. Beneath the starry sky of the nights without end when the Sufis celebrate their rituals in the villages of the Upper Nile region, all is dusty and dimly lit; then, as the night lengthens, its penetrating chill gradually seeps through the air, mingling with the fervent clamour of the devout. From the midst of this somewhat chaotic expression of faith, the munshid's voice rises forth and induces via the dhikr ( literally a memory or remembrance) the state of trance common to Sufi ritual. Total play time is 119 minutes for the four tracks on both discs. The first three clips show the style of the main part of the music while the fourth clip is a piece from the introduction which forms a substanstial part of all four tracks.

VARIOUS ARTISTS YALLA HITLIST EGYPT 842928-2 CD £ 15.00
Released back in 1990 on the Mango label this is a wonderful compilation of Al Jeel and Shaabi music. The liner notes say that five thousand years of music have, in the eyes of many, been destroyed in the last five. Culture is under threat as young people are going their owm way and making their own music that they can dance to with energy, beat and drive. The two types of music are firstly Al Jeel (the generation) from the students and modernised youth which fuses Bedouin, Nubian and Egyptian rhythms, folklore themes and sophisticated technology. The Shaabi (peoples) music is a fusion of country with town, into an urgent ghetto blue. The album displays the best of both these styles in a showcase of Egyptian new wave.
