EDIKANFO | THE PACE SETTERS | GBCD094 | CD | £ 17.50
Reissue on CD of the classic 1981 debut and also final album from this much revered Ghanaian band. Vibrantly produced by British sound explorer Brian Eno in Accra, Ghana. London based E.G. Records released the debut album from a young Ghanaian group called Edikanfo. The eight-piece band was the last group to be managed by Faisal Helwani, a charismatic impresario who was based at the popular Napoleon Club in Osu, a suburb in Ghana’s teeming capital Accra. Edikanfo quickly rose to international notoriety following the release of “The Pace Setters” because of the infectious, forward-looking highlife meets afro-funk synthesis the band committed to tape. The album also caught an additional wind of publicity due to its producer, the already legendary British musician and sound conceptualist Brian Eno. Edikanfo and Eno worked together at Studio One in Accra and produced an inspired morphing of soundworlds and processes and a significant touchstone for both artists. Howevert just when the sky seemed the limit for Edikanfo, a Coup in Ghana on the last day of 1981, tragically put the brakes on the band’s quickly developing fortunes. For years after that, the country endured enforced curfews at night, which of course ultimately gutted the live music scene in Accra and elsewhere. Because of this and other financial setbacks, the band ceased activity and its members spread out in exile, all over the world. It clearly seemed as though the story of Edikanfo, one of Ghana’s greatest bands of that era, had come to a premature end. Almost four decades later, Edikanfo has returned and with its surviving members gearing up to reissue and tour their classic 1981 album the band is once again excitedly pointed towards the future. | 1. Debut album for Ekow who is the lead singer, composer, rapper, toaster, drummer and DJ all rolled into one. This album sold over 40.000 copies in Ghana with it's Kente vibes, Adrinkra feelings and Jah Love Rastafar-I. [10T/54M]
ERIC AGYEMAN | GHANA GOLD | MWCD3016 | CD | £ 0.00
Recorded at the Melkweg in Holland in 96 this album is a definite must have for anyone who likes Highlife. Guitarist and singer Eric teams up with his old friends Thomas Frimpong, Agyaaku and the Highlife All Stars to recreate the excitement of the original Highlife Safari album. Superb vocals and guitar playing are made even more special by the drumming of Nii Osiba and the spine tingling trumpet of Long John Ntumy. Throbs from from start to finish. Tracks: Ao Me Wiasei Mu, Abena Na Aden, Gye Se Wo Bre, I Don't Care, Dee Abe Beto, asanka, Efie Mpo Ni, Ao Masem Yi, Matutumirika, Odo Pa. (10T/72M) | Track:Dee Abe Beto

You may have caught his music on Jo Shinner's programme about Ghanaian music some years ago. If you heard it you would have been immediately taken by the track she played called 'Nyeno Nsanhwe'. To describe him as gravel voiced is the understatement of the year, as he makes Mahlathini sound positively squeaky! Sadly Onipa died in Paris shortly after recording this his first and only album and it was only released on cassette in Ghana. Blind from an early age he learned to play the kalimba (Ghanaian Thumb Piano) and became a well know street musician whilst also at one time holding down a job as a 'night watchman'? The music that accompanies his vocals on this album is rather nice but superfluous as his style of singing contains all the beat and rhythm within it, provided by his wonderful voice and those lip smacking percussive sounds that will be sadly missed by all who have heard him sing. Ten georgeous tracks of original 50's and 60's Highlife from the man they call the 'Evil Genius of Highlife' and when you've heard this album I'm sure you'll agree that it's oh so true. Victor plays a scorcher on his trumpet and loads of beautiful guitar and laid back percussion coupled with a great horn section, it all goes into making a classic album. I can't sum it up better than to repeat what it say's on the sleeve notes.'SOUND MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THESE'. Favorite track for me is Lafia We Lawani with it's stunning percussive finish.
