GUINEA BISSAU

Guinea Conakry's tiny ex-Portugese colonial neighbour that has been all but flatened by civil war. It used to throb to the sound of gumbe, hopefully it will again.

BIDINTE IRAN DI FANKA'S INN1110-2 CD £ 0.00
From Guinea-Bissau, via Lisbon and Madrid comes the second Nubenegra album by Jorge Da Silva Bidinte. A typically light and catchy gumbe groove with Afro-Portugese rhythms and Flamenco elements, the mood is pensive, the playing is captivating.

Pacheco the 'King of Gumbe' and his band play a refreshingly different and extraordinary style of music. The lead guitarist plays a blinder with his twangy yet flat sounding break neck Portuguese rhythms on the opening track, Comercio Livre, dives back into the timeless beauty of the early Cuban influenced music with a track that is absolutely stunning. Hot on its heels is Carnaval with its definite Rio carnival sound and there are still four more tracks to go but I've had enough of writing, I'm going to dance and dance and dance! (F.T.Index: Gardicimento, Babune Djaby, Comercio Livre, Saudade)

SAMBALA KANOUTE BADEN TONOMA CDS6845 CD £ 0.00
Singer and guitarist Sambala recorded this album in Paris at Studio Harry Son with Sekou Bembeya Diabate on guitar and Djanka Diabate's backing vocals. More Conakry than Bissau but beautifully done none the less. [9T/50/M]
SUPER MAMA DJOMBO FESTIVAL SMD002 LP £ 0.00
From the early years comes this stunning album with its gorgeous guitar driven music. A mix of Afro Portugese music with more than a hint of Cuban style to it. Just loved the hip shaking Sociedade de Malandros which had me vibrating all over the place in seconds. [6T/37M]

VARIOUS ARTISTS PILARES DE N'GUMBE 121827 TC £ 0.00
Two tracks each from 'The Pillars of Gumbe', namely - Patcheco De Gumbe, Rey David, Azy Monterio and Malamba Sisse. Rey (King) David starts us off with Criacao, a number loaded with those twangy 'Gumbe' guitars. He also finishes the album with the slower but just as gorgeously twangy N'penga. Two tracks from Patcheco, Safrayna Manha and Catchu di Ferro, follow the same fast paced guitar style he did so well on 'Gumbe en Concerto'. Azy's first track, the plaintive No Katem Bemba is a bit sad sounding but again those twangy guitars are rather nice. His second, Fianca di Futuro is a duet and much zippier. Malamba's bright and bouncy Fala di Ira is gorgeous even if his singing is a wee bit tinny to start with. His other track Corson Na Balanco follows the same bouncy style but with the guitars literally cascading notes in all directions. (F.T.Index Catchu Di Ferro, Fala Di Ira, Corson Na Balanco, Fianca Di Futuro, N'penga.) [8T/56M] Released in1994 and not found on the web anywhere except here.
