Abdul is no great shakes vocal wise but his guitar is definitely outstanding as he take us for a leisurely stroll with the Everest Kings. Its a sweetly played if fairly uneventful Swahili rumba trip until you get to Mama Wa Kambo and Gracecar where the sebens swing into action with some great guitar picking and echoing vocals. BANA KADORI | AGWAMBO | KN0002 | CD | £ 0.00
Absolutely gorgeous from start to finish and now a very treasured possession. Lush vocal harmonies over smooth, danceable beats have made the sweet benga sounds of BANA KADORI a mainstay on the Kenyan music scene for almost 30 years. Formed in 1979 as a backing band for the legendary Ochieng Kabasseleh, the 'Band of the Children of Dori' has spent decades fine tuning their own intoxicating blend of Luo benga and Congolese rumba – a sound that exhilarated audiences on the group's first US tour in August and September of 2007. It was toward the end of that summer sojourn that BANA KADORI hooked up with Kanyo's own Nyathi Otenga Flying Studios in a basement in Bethlehem, PA to document their latest collection of sonic confections. | 1. BANA KADORI - 'MASANGA' | NAIROBI WOLOLO | EHS2201 | CD | £ 0.00
Formed and originally led by Ochieng Kabaselleh in 1979. The band have released seven cassettes in Kenya but this is their first CD. While the band's music still keeps Kabaselleh's style it will be more than appreciated by lovers of benga music with its solid base and sweet guitar work. Tracks: Mbuya Obanda, Nairobi Wololo - Haruma Pasi, Edward Nyandat, Intercooler, Nyar Ungos, Consolato Adihiambo, The Late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. (7T/69M) | Track: Intercooler
BIGGY OKATCH AND ORCH. SUPER HEKA-HEKA | NYATHI NYAKACH | BIGGY04 | TC | £ 0.00
Probably the biggest star of benga music in Kenya at the moment with a load of cassettes out. Having written that in mid 98, about four months ago I've just been informed that he's died. Still......! amazing guitar work with strings twanging in all directions while Biggy's really gutsy vocals power out over the rest of the band's sweet harmonies. The bass guitarist really thuds it out while the drummer seems to concentrate on snare as an interesting sideline to his once lucrative drumming job. However his drums will certainly get the old pins going like pistons in the sebens. The inlay shows only four tracks but in actual fact there are twelve - four singles sides A and B plus two of the singles repeated = twelve? Still going after over 60 years and making magic music when he is not in jail for having a go at the Government. Solid bass lines and thumping drums provide the perfect field for his razor sharp guitar playing which in turn is complimented by the high pitched singing of the girl singers. It's infectious lilting style will waft you away and have you dreamily strutting your stuff in some smokey Kenyan dance hall in minutes. ( F.T.Index. Never heard of Gabby and Omondi? Well you're not alone, neither had I until this CD popped onto my desk. Now I wouldn't part with it for all the tea in china. Superbly tailored singing from this talented duo is supported by some of the most wonderful guitar playing I've heard in years. The drummer belts out the toe tapping beat with a little intriguing help from what sounds like our strident old friend - the Fanta bottle. Just wait till you hear 'em go on Baba Otonglo, now thats what I call supersonic guitar. An absolute cracker of an album from end to end and not to be missed. ( F.T.Index. Top Kenyan star Kabaselleh with his Lunna Kidi Band and their hip swiveling old style rumba that's worth its weight in gold. Velvet vocals laid over glittering guitar riffs and all driven by the drummers pounding bass. It might have been recorded back in the 80's but time means nothing to music of this quality as it sounds as fresh and danceable today as it did twenty years ago. If you compare the F.T.Index below with that of the CD, 'Sanduku Ya Mapendo' above, you will see the last four here are also on it. However they are quite different recordings and the tape version has two absolute crackers in Wuora Ogola Adoyo and Princess Lako. Some more songs from the late Kabaselleh and quite different to the 'From Nairobi with Love' tracks. LABAN OCHUKA AND ULINZI BAND | SAFARI - HARAMBEE STARS | LOMC001 | TC | £ 0.00
Originally entitled 'Harambee Stars' after a local soccer club and released in 1995 but due to the Club being pretty bloody useless I'm told the cassette nose dived through association! Anyway Laban has re-released it with the same songs in a different order and with a new inlay card and title. Is it any good I hear you ask well if it isn't I'll eat my hat and yours and your friend's as well. Its flamin brilliant, with guitars throbbing and tinkling soukous style all the way and a rock solid dance beat that becomes totally infectious, just try staying still! As if that wasn't enough, the vocals of Laban and the band are pretty hot as well. Definitely recommended - in fact PICK OF THE NEWSLETTER. ( F.T.Index: Nafuma, Ebilemba, Harambee Stars, Mjini Taabu, Liloba, Safari. ) [6T/63M] Email from Steven Mukenya 14/9/07. I would like to buy your music, but as I was browsing thru I realized that you have made a comment about Harambee Stars(our Kenyan national football team)being pretty bloody useless(to use your own words).I find this very insulting since I have been an ardent supporter of the team thru thick and thin, like every sports franchise they have their ups and downs, bearing in mind that we do not come to England and insult your teams. Bear in mind that this is Afrikan music that you are selling mostly to the people of Afrika. Kindly remove this statement from your posting. Thanks. REPLY Dear Steven Thank you for your email about the Harambee Stars. Whilst I knew nothing about the team, indeed I didn't even realise they were the National team, I was quite happy to trust and copy the write up given to me by my supplier in Kenya. So your email came as a bit of a surprise as you are the first person to draw my attention to it since it was first posted 12 years ago. However as the album in question was released in the early 1990's (actually dated 1995) it would seem that the quote I have copied from http://kenyapage.net/football/90s.html would indeed back up what my supplier said. QUOTE "Kenya thus qualified for the Africa cup of nations in 1992 but it was yet another disaster. As the tournament started, many of the players were apparently unhappy with coach Gerry Saurer and decided to give a lacklusture performance in order to have the coach fired. Saurer was actually a hotelier masquerading as a football coach. He got the job thanks to his close friendship with KFF caretaker chairman, Mathew Adams Karauri. Kenya did not qualify for the tournament again for 12 years." I think therefore that my write up should stay unaltered. Laban Ochuka was originally a member of the Maroon Commandos and then joined another army band, the Ulinzi Orchestra. Ochuka died in May 2006. | 1. HARAMBEE STARS 2. EBILEMBA/ODONGO 3. NAFUMA 4. One of Kenya's best Zairumba bands which was formed back in 1975 and has since then been regularly topping the charts except when they got deported for a while in 1985 after making this album. Led by Bwamy Walumona their beautifully played music and vocal harmonies are simply breath taking. The guitar playing is wonderful but it shares top of the bill with a tremendous horn line up that has layer upon layer of brass cascading in all directions. Take a good listen to the title track to see this in all it's glory and while you're at it you'll hear the vocals in English - not roughly put together but masterfully fitted to the music - so suprised on hearing it that I nearly fell out of my seat and I was strapped in at the time! Real magic from the group, twelve strong at this point, which was recorded live on a tour of Malawi back in 1978. Although the applause does sound a bit canned to my ears the music is just wonderful. When I saw the word - Yehova - in the title I straight away thought Gospel Music like South Africa's Holy Cross Choir, The Holy Spirits and latterly the sound of Rebecca Malope. The answer was yes, it was Gospel, however I wasn't prepared for the beautiful and infectiously joyous sounds that came off my little silver disc. Mary, who has been blind from birth, has truly been blessed with an outstanding voice and with backing vocals and simple but superbly played music from her husband Alex, Abel Amoyi and John Katana they have combined to produce an absolutely heavenly album. A beautiful album of sparkling benga guitar music from composer, singer and guitarist Ochieng with help from guitarists Samwel Oyoo on bass and Okeyo on rhythm, singer and drummer Peter Otieno and drummer Sam Kadogo. Ochieng is still going strong at fifty with live performances at Kisumu's Kenyatta Sports Stadium every week. He started his career with Continental Kilo Jazz in 1960 and over the years played with the Victoria Jazz Band, in its many offshoots and with Tausi Jazz before launching Victoria All Stars in 1999. OGUTA BOBO | OLD IS GOLD | OKO003 | TC | £ 0.00
According to The Rough Guide to World Music - Not much is known about the late Oguta Bobo Otange but that he's a compelling accordion player from among the Luo of western Kenya and his music covered the gamut of topics from serious social commentary to the lighter side of love. I can't add much to that except that I found Oguta's attractive rather gutsy vocals extremely intriguing when backed by the mixed rhythmic metallic and leather percussion and his simple but precise accordion play. While its no dance floor stomper it certainly is a pleasantly infectious sound. Just listen to him steaming through Julias Ouma, now that's what I call style. [10T/40M] ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. OGUTA BOBO | RUJINA KALANDO | EHS9801 | CD | £ 0.00
The late Oguta Bobo on CD format with more original recordings crackles and all. The sleeve notes refer to - The use of humour as a tool to deliver subtle but serious messages, or just to make light of otherwise untouchable topics were his hallmark. When Oguta talks of a half-blind person coming across a currency bill along the way and wondering how much better those with full vision must have done, all that can be done is laugh it off. While you can't understand the humour unless you speak Luo you can definiteley appreciate the laid back style of Oguta's gravelley vocals and his wonderful accordion playing set to a beautifully primitive percussion backing. Great stuff. ( F.T.Index: No particular order but Susan, Odero Kongoro, Nelson Owuo and Ongalo Miso are very nice. ) [10T/44M] | 1. ALFRED WAMBOGO 2. RUJINA KALANDO 3. ODERO KONGORO 4. Modern Kenyan music with a very African feel to it. Sammy is one of the biggest stars in central Kenya and with very good reason. The deceptively simple guitar work is not as full of fireworks as maybe Diblo or Rigo but it doesn't half keep your tootsies tapping and the songs chugging along. I'm told that this tape can be heard in just about every bus station or hotel bar in central Kenya, which must say more than I can about it. A definite cracker. A great, if a tiny bit murky album of traditional music from Western Kenya. It contains a very up tempo set of tracks played on the orutu - a one string fiddle, a traditional flute and a cow horn that sounds more like a didgeridoo plus some thudding drums, all of which makes for a cracking album. The words are praise singing but Panga Uzazi is not about individuals but refers to the benefits of Family Planning while Nyako Matar scolds women who don't keep up their appearances. VARIOUS ARTISTS | KIKUYU FOLK SONGS - ADULTS ONLY Vol. 2 | C/S184 | TC | £ 0.00
Folk songs for adults? If you speak the lingo I'm told it's almost a Kikuyu Kama Sutra set to music. More importantly it is great to listen too even if you do miss out on the translation of the juicy bits. Great vocals from the guy leading the call and response style singing from the big mixed chorus (probably Joseph Kamaru). The leading lady is also outstanding as she powers out the replies from the girls side. My friend, Don, says she's definitely not shy and she can chase him anytime - the mind boggles! Musically it has some gorgeous soft tinkling benga guitars with mixed drums and a pinch of sweetly played flute to provide the atmospheric background as the sexy tales unfold. VARIOUS ARTISTS | LUO TRADITIONAL NYATITI - 6 IN 1 | JOJC01 | TC | £ 0.00
The title describes exactly what is inside but the music drawn from six famous players is first class with the nyatiti playing nothing short of low down funky! The accompaniment comes from the players ankle rattles or gara and the oduong which is a metal ring worn on the big toe and hit against any handy box. Definite shades of John Lee Hooker there! The album is mostly praise singing and Gor Mahia F.C. who are celebrated in one song are a particularly famous but not very good football team from the area while Agunda Jamba was a famous warrior. VARIOUS ARTISTS | MARASHI YA RIVER ROAD | AGS/C2010 | TC | £ 0.00
'The Perfume of the River Road' is a compilation that gives a good representation of a more modern approach to traditional Kenyan sounds. The tape itself has not been recorded as carefully as we would expect over here so it will have the VU meters of your tape deck reaching the red zones that have been untouched since Tai Sackho Vol. 1 ! However the music is quite gentle and it sounds only a touch muffled with Dolby 'B' switched on. The music is a very fragrant mix of dry and amplified guitar which although sounding very simple is, I'm informed, very deceptive and difficult to emulate. Look out for the fanta bottle percussion and the penny whistle which is wonderful. It would also seem that when this album was made the twist was popular in Kenya! VARIOUS ARTISTS | SPOTLIGHT ON KENYAN MUSIC | EUCD2030 | CD | £ 0.00
Fourteen tracks and 75 minutes of modern Kenyan music from a variety of artists. A real collaboration here between AIT Records in Kenya with help from EMI and Alliance Francaise de Nairobi, Kenya's Department of Culture and the artists on track 14. Together they put together the Spotlight on Kenya music competition and here we see the winners. All the tracks are very good but Juma Abdulla's Sukari is my favorite. | 1. VARIOUS ARTISTS | TARABU MUSIC | SM1520-2 | CD | £ 0.00
A modern album that still retains the essential serenity and throb of traditional taarab music from the singing Queen of the Indian Ocean coast - Malika. She is accompanied by dharabouka drummers Muhaji and Al-Abdi, organist Wamasha and bass guitarist Mzamin. A beautiful set of tracks that I could listen to every day and never get bored with. Even tracks 8 and 9 where taarab meet samba (yes samba that South American thing) head on are just great. Modern Taarab at its inovative best. (10T/59M)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - ZILIZOPENDWA | TWIST AND TWIST AGAIN | CPOLP2003 | TC | £ 0.00
Imagine it's the late 50's early 60's and Kenya is echoing to the sound of the twist.... The what..... the twist, yes the same as made famous by Chubby Checker, but mind you, there is a bit of a difference. When it got over to Africa they didn't have much in the way of drum kits so they improvised as only Africa can with some lovely, if basic, percussion which literally shakes, rattles and rolls along. The super sweet vocals, almost barber shop in style, are accompanied by some smashing guitar picking. Not to be missed. The 12 tracks were actually 15 and they weren't in the right order anyway! [15T/41M] ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. KONDAKTA 2. WEE MWATUMA 3. MULOFA YANGU 4. ARUSI YANGU 5. SOFIA TWIST 6. UGONJWA WA MAPENZI 7. KENYA YA LEO 8. NJAGALA TWIST 9. SIKUTI TWIST 10. ADUI YAKO 11. MY BROWN GIRL 12. HAKUNA MWINGINE 13. HADIJA NGAWA 14. NAKWENDA CONGO 15. HARAMBEE HARAMBEE
VICTORIA B KINGS BAND WITH COLLELA MAZEE | JESSICA | EHS2401 | CD | £ 0.00
The first in a series of catchy and unique benga style music CDs from the late Collela Mazee spanning most of his musical career. Richard Owino, aka Collela Mazee, was born in 1951 at Gem Aluor, Kenya and two year after graduating in 1969 he joined the late Ochieng Nelly's Victoria Jazz. About a year later, the band split up and most of the musicians went their separate ways. Three members, Okeyo Achayo, Opiyo Bwana Emma and Collela continued and joined with Peter Saoke, Otonde Kajonyo, Odongo Agwata, John Oyona and Wilson Toto Misiani. Collela later realised he had lost the autonomy over his own recordings and decided to originate his own company - Oula Recording Company. Some band members did not like the idea and opted out. The remaining members renamed the band Victoria B. The departed members formed Victoria C. The year was 1979. Victoria B continued to record with Colly at the helm. Unfortunately, Collela passed away on the 7th of March 2000 having composed in excess of 300 songs. Collela's sons now carry on their father's legacy. Fans of Collela Mazee and benga music will find this CD compelling in its originality and refreshing in its grounding in the real benga. Tracks: Nyar Kanan, Abonya Okamba, Piny En Mano, Jessica, Akech Pammy, Wasung Hera, Benta Bi Ika, Gar Maka Ogaga and J. Tam Agan Kawere.
