MOROCCO

A country with many different styles of music, Berber, Andalous, Sufi, Chaabi, Rai and Sephardic to name but a few. All very different and all very interesting.

GROUPE AFLACK MODERN MOROCCAN MUSIC AAA102 CD £ 0.00
The Aflak brothers Aziz, Jamal and Lucien lead their group through a selection of their top hits. They sing and play a lively and infectious mix of music which draws upon Algerian Rai, Western Rock plus the traditional sounds of Morocco and has been described very aptly as MAROCK'N ROLL. In the late 80's and early 90's their music won them many prizes at festivals across North Africa as well as in Europe. To my mind there is definitely a bit of 'Influence de ABBA' in there somewhere! GROUPE AMARNA EL GHABA MCPE1362 TC £ 0.00
GROUPE LAAZAZ A PARIS SH462 TC £ 8.00
Following on from SH461 this is the second of two albums both issued on cassette in 1982 and both called A Paris. No inlay details of who the artists are or who is playing what instrument. Very little info on the internet but the artists do seem to be still playing across Europe today. Their original folk or street music known as chaabi has seen a Westernisation over the years but this is the original style and instrumentation and I love it. 1. EL OUALIDA

The music and trance rituals of the Gnawa of the Atlas mountains have long fascinated the world since the Master Musicians of Joujouka came out. The group was formed 10 years ago and on this release they include the Cuban jazz piano of Omar Sosa and the sax of Spain's Jorge Pardo alongside the Moroccan instrumenation and vocals. The guests in no way intrude into the ambiance but rather add colour to an understated musical reverie. A TOP SELLING ALBUM

OUM ZARABI MDC013 CD £ 20.00
With Zarabi, Oum weaves her music out of her experiences, her roots and the memories of the moroccan people. A Moroccan of Saharan origin, Oum immediately impresses with her remarkable combination of power and sensitivity. With her sensual voice she explores the diversity of Moroccan music that she blends with soul and Gnawa and Hassani rhythms. Inspired by the music of her native country but also by the music of the whole African continent and by Jazz, she develops a subtle musical world in which her Saharan origins echo. Her new album, Zarabi was recorded in two unusual settings: in rural Normandy and the desert outside the village of M'Hamid El Ghizlane in Southern Morocco. Zarabi, which means rugs in the Moroccan dialect Darija, is a tribute to the female weavers of that same village. The artists create their rugs from old clothes supplied by their clients, and they are therefore assembling not just a rug but also a memory in their delicate creations. Oum felt her own creative process echoed that of the memory-weaving artists.

I can't do better than Robert Christgau's 1994 review. - With Oran's chebs and chabas repressed, depressed, or scared away by the fundamentalists, superproducer Ben Omar Rachid took to prospecting just over the Moroccan border in Oujda and finally far west in Casablanca. His first export is these eight 1988-to-1993 singles, which sound from here like the rawest, most arresting rai compilation ever. Mixing old and new with a fine disregard for anybody's verities, the Berber-Gnawa-Shabi admixtures are lighter sonically and quirkier culturally, with male-female interplay a convention and the battle-of-Algiers ululations a surefire attention getter.
