Smooth Soul-Mbaqanga very much in the style of the Soul Brothers. No doubt Johny Chonco who is a guest on the album and plays with the Soul Brothers feels totally at home with the music. The Brothers added a bit of zest with their sax line up but you don't notice the absence because the group's vocals don't need any back up. Great sound and if you like Soul Brothers it's a must.

Amampondo are one of the most exciting groups currently playing and recording indigenous South African music. Their heavily percussive Xhosa rythms and compelling vocal chants echo through a stream of layered songs and wildly energetic dance movements which are at the forefront of cultural resistance to apartheid. Traditional Zulu music that is played in a very atmospheric way and was originally released back in 1985. Simply gorgeous to listen to these original compositions are steeped in South African musical traditions and and will leave you spellbound. They are infused with the singular visionary craft of Swazi musical wizard and instrument maker Smiles Mandla Makama. Azumah was formed by a group of talented young dancer-musicians from Soweto and Long Time Ago is the surprising and enticing resulting album which was recorded in the home of theatre stalwarts Des and Dawn Lindberg in Johannesburg.

BOYOYO BOYS BACK IN TOWN ROUCD5026 CD £ 0.00
Way back in the late sixties, early seventies the Boyoyo Boys climbed their way to the top of the African Township Jive Charts (Mbaqanga Jive, as it was commonly known). These sales number in the tens of thousands in South Africa. They achieved seventeen gold records in the short space of four years. Recording came to a halt when a year-and-half-long tour was undertaken, on which hundreds and thousands of fans demanded they extend the tour. The late seventies once again proved that the Boyoyo Boys were still tops; three gold discs followed, one after the other, with hits such as Pretoria and Brakpan Special. Sadly in 1984 the drummer Archie Mohlala was tragically stabbed and killed in a township shabeen. The other band members were so devastated after having worked together for fifteen years that they decided to take a break from recording and performing altogether. It wasn't long before the name Boyoyo Boys was again up in lights when international star Paul Simon heard a tape of the Boyoyo Boys material, which was his main inspiration for the Grammy Award winning album entitled Graceland. Tracks: Back in Town, Maraba Start 500, Daveyton Special, Duba Duba, Mapetla 50, Pulukwani Centre, Brakpan No.2, Dube Station, Archie Special, Vezunyawo.

David Kramer was born in Worcester, South Africa and is one of the country's best known folk singer, comedian and musician. He began his career in the mid 1970's but it wasn't until his first album released in 1980 that he became realy well known. The album BAKGAT! was immediately banned due to its political satire, coarse language and the mixing of the English and Afrikaans languages. Also famous as a director and producer of musical stage shows such as District Six and Kat and the Kings. Have a listen to the clips and even though some of it is in Afrikaans it is all very listenable.

HOLY SPIRITS BOKANG MOLIMO TEL2183 LP £ 40.00
The original record from 1988 and here I am in 2020 just playing it for the first time since it went in my box 30 odd years ago. Joseph Dee Dumako is the moving force behind this album, playing all the keyboards and the drum machine. However don't let that put you off as it says on the back of the sleeve that this album is hotter than hot cakes and his added trumpet vibes are going to keep you dancing and screaming for more. Just have a listen to the tracks and judge for yourself. Sleeve shows a little age fade around the edges but is otherwise perfect. Record has the odd tiny click but otherwise is mint. A rather rare album as the internet only came up with one copy on Discogs and that wasn't for sale. 1. FATSHENG LENA

ITHULAMSINDO UNTOMB'NKULU CRS201 LP £ 10.00
WOW!! what an intro track to this brilliant Modern Zulu Traditional. A thumping beat with a growling bass guitar and husband and wife having a furious argument. Now in comes a gospel choir with a bit of Disco in mind. However the argument has now woken the baby so bring on the choir again and give it everything you've got, argument and all! FANTASTIC. The rest of the album? Well it's more traditional but has some superb vocals, thumping beat and accordion. Without the first track I'd give it 9 out of 10 but with it I'd give it a definite 12 out of 10. The first track was a BBC Radio 1 Andy Kershaw track of the month.

Certainly the best female singer/songwriter in S.A. today. You don't have to look any further than this, her debut album, to prove it. Jennifer's incisive vision and wit expose the fabric of white South African suburban life. She writes of frustrated housewives, army widows, teenage lust, dreams, fear... and coping with it. Great voice, brilliant lyrics and smashing music, what more could you ask. White South African folk music at its best.

The lyrics are subtle tensions as opposed to the kind of raw and obvious anger to be found on her first album.Though there are songs driven by funky South African rhythms Jennifer's strength lies in her ballads. Playing solo or with full backing, the mood lingers long after switching the music off. Definitely a gifted singer and songwriter. Recommended. Sleeve as new still with cover on. JOHANNES KERKORREL AND GEREFORMEERDE BB EET KREEF SHIB32 LP £ 5.00
Not a blues band by any stretch of the immagination but pure Boer rock and roll! Cracking stuff as long as you can get on with Afrikaans instead of Zulu. I look at it this way, the music's great and who listens to the words anyway!

Ralph Rabie was sacked from the Rapport Newspaper for using quotes from President Botha's speeches in his music. He then performed under the name of Johannes Kerkorrel en die Gereformeerde Blues Band (Johannes Kerkorrel and the Reformed Blues Band), a deliberate reference to the Reformed Church. The band also included the Afrikaans singer-songwriter Koos Kombuis. Their brand of new Afrikaans music was dubbed alternatiewe Afrikaans (alternative Afrikaans) and exposed divergent political views to a new generation of Afrikaners. In 1989, they released the album Eet Kreef (Eat Crayfish) on the now-defunct Shifty Records label, which was a commercial success despite its tracks being banned from radio airplay by the state-controlled South African Broadcasting Corporation, which was (and still is) the government mouthpiece. Colloquially, 'Eet Kreef' is ambiguous, meaning either 'Enjoy!' or 'Get lost!'. Thanks to Wikipedia for info above. Original release imported from Shifty Records and BRAND NEW still sealed.

The group's third of four albums has a more pop orientated style than before but still retains the throbbing African rhythms. Sung in English and Zulu it covers the politics of the apartheid era and also the history of world revolution against oppression. One track 'Dela' was used on the soundtrack of the 1997 Walt Disney picture "George of the Jungle". Have a listen some to some great music. Savuka was formed after Johnny's partner in Juluka, Sipho Mchunu returned to cattle ranching This was Savuka's second album released in 1988. Made at Plus 4 Recording Studio in Calafornia, it was, as all Johnny's music, produced by Hilton Rosenthal. Sung in English with Zulu backing and mixing traditional Zulu vocals with modern instrumentation. A bit like Paul Simon's Graceland. JOYCE AND THE SHOE LACES BASADI BALLA BL468 LP £ 0.00
The late Joyce Mogatusi who died in 2012 was a leading member of the Dark City Sisters and also the Flying Jazz Queens. The Sisters split up in the early 80's. However in 1984 Joyce once more teamed up with producer West Nkosi at Mavuthela to make this solo album Basadi Balla which is a Tswana language LP and was released under the name Joyce and The Shoe Laces (The Shoe Laces were West’s team of instrumental players). Joyce's vocals were multi-tracked to create a smooth girl group harmony sound like the famous Sisters. For more information please go to A Tribute to Joyce Mogatusi

JULUKA AFRICAN LITANY 57145 TC £ 0.00
The second album from Juluka released in 1981 sees Johnny and the group's vocals much more up front and with a rousing Celtic/folksy story telling style with a bit of rock and with lyrics that very much more anti government than their first album. The booming sound of 'Impi' and the tale of the Zulu's defeat of Lord Chelmsford's army at Isandlwana is definitely one of my favorite tracks and always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end! A great album. ( F.T.Index: Impi, Thandiwe, Gijim'beke, Heart of the Dancer, African Sky Blue, Jarusalem, African Litany, Mama Shabalala, High Country, Bull-Man Free. ) [10T/41M]

JULUKA UBUHLE BEMVELO 57146 TC £ 0.00
The third album see's the re-recorded versions of the best of the repetoire in Zulu put together by Johnny and Sipho over a ten year period. Not only is it great music but Johnny getting his tongue around the twisting Zulu lyrics is wonderful and entrancing to hear. Couple those lyrics with some great guitar playing from Sipho and a very dance orientated beat and its definitely a case of 'have tootsies will travel' takes to the floor until exhausted. ( F.T.Index: Umfazi Omdala, Woza Friday, Dumazile Bazothini, Umgane Wami, Biza, Sonqoba, Soweto, Zingani Zami, Inhliziyo Yegwala. ) [10T/37M]
JULUKA UNIVERSAL MEN 57144 TC £ 0.00
Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu started their duo Juluka in the 70's in the bad days of apartheid. That they became a top selling act was the more remarkable as Johnny was a white social anthropologist while Sipho was a black migrant worker. Their music cut across the racial barriers with its beat driven mbaqanga with use of both Zulu and English lyrics and the traditional foot thuding Zulu dancing style known as 'Indlamu'. Universal Men was their first release in 1979 and of the seventeen other musicians on the album, Mervyn Africa's keyboards and Robbie Jansen's flute and sax are outstanding. ( F.T.Index: Universal Men, Unkosibomvu - The Red King, Africa, Thula Mtaname, Inkunzi Ayihabi Ngokumisa, Sky People, Deliwe, Old Eyes, Uthando Luphelle. ) [9T/39M]

MADLALA BROTHERS INDOD'EMNYAMA ERH2056 LP £ 0.00
Released back in 1987 Indoda'Emnyama saw brothers Bhekabantu and Thembitshe Madlala inject some synthesized flair into their traditionally guitar driven maskandi music, a style they perfected on later albums like Umona (1989) and Usebuyil' Ududuzile (1991). This was a style we know more often as South African bubblegum disco which was popular in the 80s and early 90s. A very rare item as no LP for sale on the web anywhere. I always think of the Mahotella Queens as three but here this 1977 release has four on the cover. MALOMBO PELE PELE ATH8003 LP £ 50.00
Malombo - Spirit in the Venda language, have created some of the strangest and most haunting jazz based music I have ever come across. Phillip Tabane's guitar skills are out of this world while his partner Gabriel Thobenjane and his cow hide and baobab root drums are a delight to hear being played by a master. Mesmerising vocals add the finishing touch to an album that combines traditional southern African music with jazz in an incredible fusion. Have a listen and be amazed. Sleeve has a few small creases bottom left corner and disc rub mark at top back and front (see images) Record is as NEW. Played once for the clips. Strangely track 3 - Marabi is listed on the cover as being 8.14 in time but the actual recording is only 5.49 as listed on the record label. The score, by Ngema and Hugh Masekela, features the stomping dance rhythms, electronic keyboard, blasts of brass, and idiosyncratic vocal harmonies that are trademarks of Mbaqanga, the pop sound of South Africa’s black townships. I can play this album all day and every day as it's sparkling vocals and effervescent music is simply out of this world. Born in 1955 at Mandeni on the coast of northern KwaZulu. Mfeliseni is a largely self- taught guitarist with a unique style of playing the local maskandi music which he mixes with the more traditional styles. His first album was released in 1976 and he has played on the movie 'Sarafina' and with Paul Simon, plus has toured as far as Jamaica and New York. This definitely goes down as my favourite South African album for some years! It puts the Soul Brothers into perspective - makes them sound about as interesting as watching paint dry! They were one of the most popular Zulu traditional groups of the 1980s in South Africa. Unfortunately – as with many artists who specialise in Maskanda music – there is very little information about them and details remain very limited even though the band was still active in the 1990s and well into the 2000s. This album was released in 1989. Sleeve is like new. The record although new and unplayed until I recorded the clips does have a few clicks here and there and a series of clicks between the end and start of tracks 2 and 3 on side B. So if you do buy this album it will come with a nice cleaned up CD-R copy complete with label, bookfront and inlay taken from my own collection. OBED NGOBENI AND KURHULA SISTERS TSHIKETA TEL2132 LP £ 12.00
The original South African issue of My Wife Bought A Taxi which was released by Teal in South Africa in 1986. Obed Ngobeni is one of a handful of contemporary Shangaan jive artists competing against the large scale success of the Zulu jive scene. Obed has fused the traditional Shangaan music of southern Zimbabwe with elements of pop music to create a distinctive synthesis. This new music has an intense driving rhythm propelled by traditional percussion and synthesizers and guitars. The lovely background singers are the Kurhula Sisters. Extraordinary album from Philip and his Malombo Jazzmen who mix jazz harmonies with the local Venda, Pedi and other South African music styles played on a mix of modern and traditional instrumentation. Not much in the way of vocals but the sounds of guitars, flute, simple percussion and the superb malombo drums, after which the group takes it name, is simply amazing.

This is a double album containing the LPs Siyabonga Baba and Ukholo Lwami. The following is from liner notes of the Siyabonga Baba LP. Formed by lead singer Freddy Gala and his brothers and cousins in 1973, Pure Gold are a gospel choir of the independent Old Apostolic Church in that vaunted tradition, but 'Onward Christian Soldiers' never sounded like this. Their vocals echo age-old African styles of arrangement and performance such as powerful mbube melodies, four part harmonies which swoop and shimmer, and call-and-response, that most African of singing forms. They sing both European influenced hymns and Freddy's own sweetly accessible compositions sung in the African languages Zulu and Sotho. Can't tell you much about Ukholo Lwami except that it must have been pretty rare. When the first track started my immediate thought was that I had put the record on at the wrong speed as the singing was racing away at break neck speed. It turned out that the music was that fast all the way through. The singing in Tsonga with drums driving the lovely guitar and keyboard backing is just wonderful as you can hear from the clips. Track 8 is crazy just have a listen. Checking on the Internet I found mention of Maria No. 5 but nothing else at all about this album or the artists. The album was made in 1987 at Power House Studio 2 and was released on the Beat City label of Tusk Music. Both record and cover are almost as new. Tiny rub mark on sleeve front and back at top. Printed on the back in Gold 'On loan for promotion only not for sale ownership and and all rights reserved'. VERY, VERY RARE.

SAKHILE AFRICAN ECHOES KAZCD17 CD £ 0.00
The band Sakhile was formed in 1981 by Sipho Gumede, Mabi Thobejane, and Khaya Mahlangu and other well know jazz influenced musicians. They became a popular Cape jazz fusion outfit during the time of apartheid. However they were stopped from having any radio airplay and the group was disbanded. They reunited in 1987 and this album was released in 1989 as Phambili. Sakhile gained an international reputation but disbanded for a second time in 1991 when this album was re-released in the U.K. by Kaz Records as African Echoes. Sipho Gumede followed a solo career during the remainder of the 1990's and died in 2004.

Lucky Dube's group 'Slaves' in action on their own and coming across very nicely too. Musically its pretty much typical reggae with guitars, drums and keyboards providing a smooth and somewhat laid back accompaniment to some very good vocals. Stimela was founded in the early 80's after soul band the Cannibals disbanded. T.S.D. MASEVE AND NAHLAYISANI SISTERS IXIKUMA KUMANE LEOH020 LP £ 25.00
Brand new still sealed which is why the images are a bit cloudy. Released in 1990. As was often the case with South Africa music, the best results came about when musicians and producers of various backgrounds defied apartheid rules and collaborated. So although the final product here is an album of Tsonga music, giving it that superior touch are top players like Felani Gumbi and Vuka Mbele who handle all keyboards, including plenty of spacey samples. Frontman T.S.D. Maseve plays bass and in his notes makes it clear that his music is for one and all: My thanks to all the people who worked on this album with me. THE JAZZ EPISTLES JAZZ IN AFRICA Vol. 1 CDN1004 CD £ 0.00
Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Kippie Moeketsi made this album in 1959. BRILLIANT ALBUM (14T/72M)
THE MINISTERS NDIZE BONONO NA? GSL265 LP £ 0.00
The rather uninteresting looking cover hides a hidden gem. The Ministers or The Jazz Ministers as they are better known as have been one of the leading bands playing music known as Cape Jazz. The Jazz Ministers founder Victor Ndlazilwana died in 1978 and trumpeter, and tireless teacher of jazz, Johnny Mekoa took over as their leader. He went on to produced this superb album in 1985. If you don't like jazz you will love this album. If you do like Jazz then you will find this album absolutely irisistable.

THE TULIPS THE CAPE TOWN MINSTRELS 1986102 CD £ 20.00
Magical potpourri of songs from The Tulips whose members are leading lights of Cape Town's famous Coon Carnival. Not enough room here for all the information in the 32 page booklet that accompanies the CD so lets just say that the songs cover over four hundred years of the Cape's history. Every race, religion and language that has had connections in the area and even beyond is represented by the melodious voices of the singers with the banjo player leading the gleeful singalongs. I haven't heard anything like it since the wonderful Mr Mac and the Genuines album Baba Riebab. [15T/57M]

Acording to Wikipedia - The Kaapse Klopse (or simply Klopse), formerly known as the Coon Carnival and today officially called Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, is a Cape coloured minstrel festival that takes place annually on 2 January in Cape Town. It is also referred to as Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year). As many as 13,000 minstrels take to the streets garbed in bright colours, either carrying colourful umbrellas or playing an array of musical instruments.

VARIOUS ARTISTS AFRICAN JAZZ JIVE - VOL. 3 JIVEV3 TC £ 0.00
These tracks were originally recorded and released in South Africa between 1955 and 1965. The relationship between the black musicians and white-owned record companies was then, as now, highly unequal. While the record companies made large profits from this music (sold almost exclusively to blacks), very few artists managed to make a living from it. Typically an artist would receive a session fee for making the record - maybe $10 - and then nothing more while the record company benefited. This situation is not confined to the music industry, however, but is typical of the position of black people in South Africa. In order to compensate, in a small way, for the exploitative conditions under which this music was produced, and to contribute to the struggle of black people in South Africa, a payment will be made from the sale of each cassette to the African National Congress (A.N.C.) of South Africa.

The above is a faithful copy from the original cassette. Yet more incredible stuff.

VARIOUS ARTISTS DUCK FOOD - FEMALE VOCAL MBAQANGA CLASSICS EMW5505 LP £ 0.00
These were the songbirds who lightened the dark years of the mid-seventies in Soweto and the other Black Townships of South Africa. The MAVUTHELA team who made this record were a tightknit crew of producers, songwriters, arrangers, musicians and vocalists who consistantly produced the best in Township Music which found markets throughout Southern Africa. The Dark City Sisters were the top female group of the sixties, having records released in London, Lagos, Nairobi as well as topping the charts in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Dark City Sisters are fronted here by Joyce Mogatusi. The Mahotella Queens are a floating team of session singers established in 1964 by talent scout and song writer Robert Bopape. The Queens took over from the Sisters in the seventies as the top female group with their MGQASHIYO sound (the indestructable beat) which joined the sweet voices of the Queens with the deep voiced groaner Simon 'Mahlathini' Nkabinde and the music of the Makgona Tshole Band, the toughest Mbaqanga session team. The Mgababa Queens and Irene and the Sweet Melodians were formed by ex-Mahotella personnel. All these groups recorded songs in both the major Black languages of South Africa, Zulu and Sotho. D.a. Vanrenen 1986. VARIOUS ARTISTS SAX AND FLUTE JIVE - VOL. 2 JIVEV2 TC £ 0.00

More incredible stuff.
