BHUNDU BOYS | THE SHED SESSIONS ( 2 x CD ) | SADZA1 | CDx2 | £ 15.00
What wonderful memories this CD brings back having seen them first in Exeter and then more than a few times at the Concorde Club in Brighton. A superb 29 track compilation that includes all the tracks from Shabini, Tsvimbodzemoto and Chekudya Chose plus also 6 tracks released only in Zimbabwe. Created amidst the cultural boom that followed Zimbabwe's independence, the music that The Bhundu Boys recorded at Shed Studios in Harare between 1982 and 1986 was African dance pop, irresistibly powered by drums, guitars, voices and youthful high spirits. On the strength of these records, the Boys toured Europe and North America in the late '80s, winning new fans with their exuberant shows wherever they went, and were signed to a major international label. But their subsequent albums were disappointing, and the group was undone by unrealistic expectations, poor decisions and illness. The Shed Sessions - all of the sessions collected in this annotated 2CD set - remain the best testament of what a great band The Bhundu Boys were. Comes complete with 20 page inlay booklet. BHUNDU BOYS | TRUE JIT | 242203-2 | CD | £ 0.00
The first of their two international releases for W.E.A. and not as good as their previous home releases. Like the Curate's egg its not bad in parts but the inclusion of horns rather spoils their natural home grown sound and they definitely should not have let them sing in English. Chemedzevana and Ndoitasei are tracks that I do rather like though. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. JIT JIVE 2. MY FOOLISH HEART 3. CHEMEDZEVANA 4. RUGARE 5. VANA (THE CHILDREN) 6. WONDERFUL WORLD 7. BLACK SAINTS | OH ISHE | MUWZ107LP | LP | £ 0.00
An absolutely wonderful gospel album is what I wrote about this record when I got it over 20 years ago and then I put it in a rack and left it there....... Well having now cleaned up the recording and transfered it to CD-R I can see what an understatement that was. It is stunningly beautiful with lovely soft guitars, a real drum set, sweet as honey vocals and catchy tunes. I particularly love track 3 which translates as God is merciful and gentle. PURE MAGIC. Just have a listen. Five tracks went straight into my computer juke box. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. OH ISHE 2. ZIVA NEMOYO 3. MWARI NGONI NORUPFAVE 4. HAMA YANGU 5. KUTI NDODAIDZWA NDIYE 6. BLACK SAINTS | RIRIPO TSIME | L4MUWZ114 | TC | £ 0.00
Paul Phiri was a singer, musician and the leader of the Black Saints band. The group is most popularly known for the hit song Yera Yera. Phiri and his group were from Mutare in Zimbabwe but his surname could suggest that he was of Malawian descent. Sadly he passed away sometime in 1995/96 after a long illness and the group now all deceased never played again. This album was released in 2005 a year before he had a leg amputated for diabetes which finally caused his death in 2011. Started his career in 1977 when he, with Biggie Tembo, Jacob Teguru, David Ziome and Franco Kazere started the World Ten Band. Later merging with the World Tomorrow Band to form The Sounds Of The Muddy Face or as it was at first just The Muddy Face. Beautiful soft Gospel based music with lovely smooth guitar play. Marvellous album from Ephat and his troup of musicians, singers and dancers that really shows the true beauty of that very underrated instrument, the mbira. Accompanied by the rattles of the hosho, the mbira players manage to totally fill the air with a wonderful cascade of notes while the powerful and deeply moving vocals tell the song's story in striking contrast to the smoothness of the music. Definitely Recommended. (F.T.Index: Nharire, Mutimukuru, Bangidza)

JONAH MOYO AND DEVERA NGWENA JAZZ BAND | TSAVA TSAVA GOLDEN REMIXES | CDGRAMMA197 | CD | £ 35.00
This album is a pleasant compilation as it reflects the time shortly after independence when young couples were happy, free and thus chose to get married in a new and promising country. Devera Ngwena Jazz Band were the main attraction, so popular that you could hear them being played at weddings or downtown shops through the loud speakers that were usually placed outside the entrance. They were the trendiest thing around and so this music portrays that period. Personally I was beginning to forget some of the tunes as I haven't been in Zimbabwe for so long and am influenced today by other cultures around me. However, as a true Zimbabwean I have a love of Devera Ngwena Jazz Band, especially their old numbers. This album of re-mixes is a real party album! Some of the artists from Zimbabwe that you have available on Natari website, as far as I am concerned were produced at a time when Zimbabwe was still discovering how to develop in the music scene, some of the material was released as 'experimental' as African-modern music hit the scene while the country was still under colonial rule. When the country gained it's independence rhythms that were exsistent before the country's time were thereafter gradually developed that today make Zimbabwean rhumba, the music of Zimbabwe, very unique. Unfortuneately some of the really good artists have just disappeared from the music scene for various reasons etc.. but Jonah Moyo and the Band, well they're something else! My thanks to Peter Chikasha over in Sweden for the above. To have a place in my collection this 2002 release must have been pretty good even if it was experimental. Having looked all over the web the only listing was mine - a rare item or what. Times are after the tracks as they are different to most other versions of the songs. JORDAN CHATAIKA AND HIS THREE SISTERS | MASHOKO AMWARI | JFLP1001 | LP | £ 0.00
Jordan Chataika (b 1939 d 1985) has been described as the godfather of Zimbabwean gospel music. Guitarist and singer Jordan started in the early 1960s when most Christians still considered nomadic guitarists like Chataika as unholy? He persevered and during the fight for independence he became well known for his songs which were seen as anti government. After independence he also became a part-time radio presenter and often shared the stage with Oliver Mtukudzi and the late David 'Mr Bulk' Chiyangwa, both gospel musicians of note. The Time Wasters who provide the backing music to this album are actually Rob Mtukudzi and Pick Kasamba. Ten wonderful tracks of traditional Mbira, Hosho and Drum music from Newmas and his former pupil Erin. They called themselves 'Tapiti' which translates as 'Typewriter'. They sang songs for children, hunting, harvesting and even rainmaking, bringing them all to life with the beautiful sound of their Mbira playing. Newmas was a subsistence farmer by day and gifted musician and teacher by night. He farmed near the Shinje river in the upper Gurure region of the country and his compositions reflected the simplicity and serenity of life there. He toured with Erin as far a field as Sidmouth and Singapore and will be sadly missed by all who heard him play.

Recorded in Copenhagen during the 'Images of Africa 93 Festival'- hence the title. As soon as you hear those guitars strike up you'll be hooked. 'Tuku' as Oliver calls his style is a combination of Shona mbira rhythms and mbaqanga with a bit of gospel for good measure. The new recording of is his chimerenga super hit 'Ndipeiwo Zano' is superb and the gospel based 'Hear me Lord' will have you singing along in no time. Superb. There would seem to be very little out there on the web about the Shirinhema Jazz Band. All I can tell you about this album is that it was released back in 1988 and the six strong group was probably led by Shepherd Musekiwa. Other than that it is lovely music so do have a listen. Record is in very good condition with only a few small clicks and cover is very good with just a little bit of wear around the edges. Chartwell Dutiro is a leading player of one of Africa's most powerful melodic instruments - the mbira. He has played for spirit mediums at many ceremonies in Zimbabwe over the last twenty years but is probably better known abroad for his mbira and sax playing with Thomas Mapfumo's Blacks Unlimited. His international group Spirit Talk Mbira consists of four mbiras combined with voices and the sound of hosho, or rattle. Recorded in London where Chartwell now lives, listening to the intricate sounds of the softly tinkling mbiras is just heavenly. (F.T.Index: Mahororo, Mukariba, Bukatiende. )[9T/62M]

THERESA AND AWENDILA | MABANGHENI | MUSI807 | LP | £ 0.00
A nice and quite catchy album from Theresa and Awendila which came with a plain black sleeve and no details except that it was recorded at Musi Oa Tunya Studios back in 1990. I couldn't find anything else about the artists or the music anywhere else on the net so if anybody has any info I would love to hear it.
Info from Nyasha Makosa: They were a husband and wife from Mozambique and they came to perform in Zimbabwe around 1988 and were popular with their other songs Asande Sana and Reconcilliation. Asande Sana was a hit on Zimbabwean charts radio. Both were military trainees in Tanzania for forces fighting for independence for Mozambique. They sang some songs from Tanzania in Swahili and for their home country of Mozambique in Shangaan. Not heard anything of them since.

THOMAS MAPFUMO AND THE ACID BAND | HOKOYO | WATER236 | CD | £ 20.00
Self taught musician Thomas Mapfumo is a legend in Zimbabwe and this was his first album released at the height of the Rhodesian War back in 1976 and the only one with the Acid Band. Mapfumo described the music as chimurenga which is a Shona word for struggle. The lyrics told of the fight against white minority rule and he replaced the traditional sound of the mbira with electric guitar. A year later the Government unhappy with his popularity sent him to a prison camp for subversion. To get released he gave a concert on behalf of the Government which backfired as the only songs he had were his revolutionary ones. Another year later after Zimbabwe had won the war for liberation he formed Blacks Unlimited and released a series of albums but fell out with the Mugabe Government by 1989 after releasing Corruption and left to live in the USA. He returned to play a series of concerts after Mugabe died but still lives in the USA. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. HOKOYO! 2. DINDINGWE 3. HWA-HWA 4. MATIREGERERA MAMBO 5. DENDERA 6. VARIOUS ARTISTS | HITS OF ZIMBABWE VOLUME 1 | ZML1002 | LP | £ 40.00
A wonderful compilation album of some of Zimbabwe's best known groups and some not so well known but equally good. Released by Teal Records back in 1980 as part of the Independence series of LP's. Three tracks went straight into my computer jukebox and they were No's 2, 3 and 9 all of which I thought were brilliant. Condition of cover is slightly worn on the edges and the front bottom RH corner. Back has some light discolouration to top and bottom seams and LH edge. Also remains of a biro pen above SIDE 2. Record has some marks but they don't affect the play which is very good with just the odd little bit of crackle here and there. When sold I will include a copy of my cleaned up collection CD-R at no extra charge. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. DEVERA NGWENA ZHIMOZHI - DEVERA NGWENA JAZZ BAND 2. PA INYANGA - MUDDY FACE 3. VIRGINIA MUKWESHA | CHAMU | SHAVACD003-2 | CD | £ 0.00
'Jiti' the rural rock and roll of the Shona people of Zimbabwe gets the treatment from the power packed and gravel voiced Virginia and her chorus. Recorded with the help of Oliver Mutakudzi the music is based on traditional mbira rhythms except for 'Kerebu' which goes back to the time when the drum was king. The traditional sounds of mbira, hosho and ngoma shine out even though the music has been embellished by some marvelous Zimbabwean guitar playing. A smashing album to dance to and when its time to give your tootsies a rest there are copious note to read in the booklet. ZVISHAVANE SOUNDS | MUTONGI GAVA | ZML1032 | LP | £ 0.00
I bought this in the late 80s with a whole pile of other Zimbabwe albums and somehow never got around to playing this one. What a mistake that was. This album is simply awesome with that lively twangy guitar playing that is the unmistakeable sound of Zimbabwe. Definitely some of the best tunes I have heard from there and the singing from the six strong group is pretty impressive as well. I should really have a dig around in my collection and see what other gems I have hidden away. ( F.T.Index: Mutongi Gava, Veza Mupini, Ipurezha, Inyama Yembongolo, Hukama Igasva, Gerita, Dai Ndakadzidza. ) [7T/43M] Just as a matter of interest I found only two references to this album and group. The LP was listed in the Sterns Guide II and the web listing was my own one! ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. MUTONGI GAVA 2. VEZA MUPINI 3. IPUREZHA 4. INYAMA YEMBONGOLO 5. HUKAMA IGASVA 6. GERITA 7.
