ADE OLUMOKO AND AFRICAN SPIRIT | YORUBA APALA MUSIC | 1984882 | CD | £ 0.00
Recorded live at the Africa Shrine in Lagos, once home to Fela Kuti and now run by his son Femi. This modern throbbing version of traditional big band Apala music shows where some of Fela's great music came from and I'm sure you will recognise the roots of some of his songs. 56 minutes and 13 tracks.

Although not cleaned up from the original recordings the sound quality is not bad. Listening to it brought back more wonderful memories from almost 30 years ago when I first heard her. Salawa's music and her singing is mesmerizing. Break neck speed and a wonderful voice that stands out from the backing singers while the talking drums belt out the beat like a machine gun. On top of that she just doesn't know when to stop as all the tracks just carry on to the end of the record. Absolute magic. If you are buying this LP it will come with a copy of my collection CD-R. AZAGAS AND ARCHIBOGS | 60'S SOUND OF LAGOS HIGHLIFE | OMCD014 | CD | £ 0.00
The sum total of knowledge about African music acquired by everybody who has ever cared hardly amounts to the proverbial drop in the bucket - and this is the music we know reasonably well. As regards many styles - and very resent, popular, big city sounds at that, not recondite traditions of tiny, isolated groups - we've barely tripped of the bucket itself. That's the case with Nigerian dance-band highlife. It was one of the greatest of African urban dance-band traditions (dance-band meaning a group using wind instruments as well as guitars and percussion). The Nigerian bands had a flair for brass and sax playing that stemmed from the old Calabar brass-bands of the 1930's, a wild edged jauntiness that made their Ghanaian mentors - E. T. Mensah and the like - seem a tad tame, and a go for the jugular instinct for mixing local rhythms and melodies with jazz-tinged horn solos and Congo-inflected guitar work. Yet what we know of these superb groups amounts to a scattering of passing references in interviews and articles written about something or somebody else. Still and all, we do have the recordings: and that's all we need to know that the 1960's was a truly wonderful decade for dance music in Lagos, a period in which musicians from all over southern Nigeria mixed languages and traditions on the bandstands and in the recording studios, creating a seemingly endless series of sounds that blended Yoruba, Ibo and other ingredients in ways that spoke to everybody. The examples in this CD are plentiful enough. Aside from the blues or "native blues" which was a name for a 6/5 rhythm, the examples range from the opening cut to Aigbe Lebarty's numbers in the Bini language spoken round Benin city in the Mid West (which was, like eastern Nigeria, to remain a highlife haven, notable for the guitar band of Sir Victor Uwaifo). Nigerian dance-band highlife took off in the 1950's, when tours by E. T. Mensah's Tempos band reinforced foundations laid by the Lagos based group of pioneers founded by Bobby Benson in the late 40's It enjoyed less than a decade of glorious maturity, which ended with all too literal a bang in 1967, when the Nigerian civil war broke out. Most of the top bands in Lagos were Ibo led, and there was hardly a group that didn't have Ibo musicians in it. When Ibo leaders declared the independence of their region under the name of Biafra, Ibo musicians left Lagos. The sound they made so prominent became politically incorrect - and by the time the war was over and the Ibo's rejoined the mainstream, the Yoruba public (and Lagos is, after all, a largely Yoruba city) had taken juju to its heart. That wasn't the whole story of course, highlife was perceived as a music of the elites (however meaningless that concept was in practice), and the coming of rock and roll had a similar effect in Africa as in the west. In addition, rootsiness was the coming thing. In reality, much for which the guitar bands (and particularly the juju musicians) have since been given sole credit - the use of local rhythms and melodies, the percussion jams - had in fact been standard practice for the Lagos dance-bands. But perception was all: jazz was out, horns were out, guitars and voices were in. In Yoruba territory, the combination completed the triumph of juju. In the east and midwest Nigerian highlife lived on, but the guitar bands were now in the ascendancy. The loss was considerable. The new generation may have dismissed the dance bands as old hat, parental-generation and the rest, but only the incurably guitar fixated could miss the joyous energy and faintly anarchic creativity of the bands on this recording. The names alone - The Archibogs, The Azaleas, The Lo Right Time Orchestra - are irresistible. And they delivered. There was hardly a band that didn't play music of amazing variety with strong local elements and jump started by soloists that could raise the dead. The variety of dance-band highlife, in fact, was as terrific as its quality. As you'll hear from this collection, the Decca label alone was recording a score of superb bands with as many versions of the basic sound. Forgotten or only dimly remembered, they were all dynamite. Same album as the LP 6361111 but this time on CD made by Lagos based Premier Records Ltd. Housed in a cardboard envelope rather than a CD case and not too wonderfully glued together as some of it got onto Celestine's name. FELA KUTI | FELA'S LONDON SCENE | STCD3007 | CD | £ 5.00
Review by John Dougan in All music. In 1971, Fela Anikulapo Kuti's record company (EMI) agreed to finance a recording date in London for Fela and band. Now huge stars in Nigeria, this trip was, in a way, a triumphant return to the country that had provided Fela with a musical education and the club scene where he cut his proverbial bandleader's teeth. What is important to note is that he had become good friends with former Cream (and at the time of this recording Blind Faith) drummer Ginger Baker, who had traveled to Lagos a year earlier to meet, hang out, and play with Fela. Baker shows up on this recording (albeit uncredited) on the track Egbe Mio, but more importantly helped get Fela gigs all over the city at such venerable venues as the 100 Club, the Cue Club, and the Four Aces. Recording at Abbey Road Studios, Fela cut these five awesome tracks in which his Afrobeat sound is more complex and jazzy than on the 69 Los Angeles Sessions. At over 13 minutes J'ehin J'ehin cuts a wicked groove for its entire length pushed by the horn section and Tony Allen's superlative drumming. Buy Africa is a anti-colonial rant worthy of the Last Poets, and Fight to Finish very simply kicks out the jams. A stunning record that marks the beginning of Fela's best period of recording. FELA KUTI | NO AGREEMENT | TRCD40032 | CD | £ 10.00
According to Wikipedia, All Music said that No Agreement follows the Afro-beat template to a masterful level with amazingly catchy guitar lines that replicate a bass guitar in their construction. A second guitarist to add some JB's funk power and a driving horn section proclaiming intricate saxophone, trumpet and organ improvised solos, and then Fela Anikulapo Kuti's wit and message for the people. The solos are magically inspired and the rhythm section rolls on with the power of a steamroller. If that is not good enough then this from The Guardian should clinch it. They said the title track is one of the greatest pieces of dance music ever recorded. So have a listen. BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED. | 1. NO AGREEMENT 2. DOG EAT DOG

FELA KUTI | OPPOSITE PEOPLE - SORROW TEARS AND BLOOD | 547383-2 | CD | £ 10.00
As John Uhl writes in AllMusic.com. The two albums included on Opposite People and Tears of Sorrow book ended the Nigerian army's deadly raid on the Kalakuta Republic, Fela Kuti's self-appointed independent state domicile, and Kuti's hostile feelings toward upper-class Nigeria are prominent on both sessions. Opposite People, recorded between 1976 and 1977, is brave and brassy, beaming with an almost joyful defiance on the title track. This album isn't particularly outspoken, focusing on the celebration of freethinking and only referring to politics through a metaphor about pants (yes, pants). But Tears of Sorrow, the first recording released after the Kalakuta's capture, is fiercer; the band's sound almost seeming to drip blood. Slower and more persistent, the ominous grooves here no longer bother with metaphor, crying out bluntly, "some people lost some bread, someone just died...them leave sorrow, tears, and blood." Alongside Woody Guthrie's Struggle, this is as stirring as musical social protest gets. "Sorrow Tears and Blood" boils over with Fela's singing and the frantic call-response of horns and chorus; the scattering sounds of people fleeing a police-and-army attack. And "Colonial Mentality" calls for a united Africa to stand up against its widespread leftovers of imperialism. The entire collection is chock-full of Kuti's distinctive polyrhythmic orchestra-funk in top form. BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED. | 1. OPPOSITE PEOPLE 2. EQUALISATION OF TROUSER AND PANT 3. SORROW TEARS AND BLOOD 4. COLONIAL MENTALITY
FELA KUTI | ORIGINAL SUFFER HEAD - I.T.T. | 547382-2 | CD | £ 10.00
Review by Adam Greenberg on AllMusic.com This double album collects the original Original Suffer Head album and I.T.T. from 1980 and 1982. Original Suffer Head, from 1982 (not to be confused with the 1984-ish Shanachie re-release of Black President by the same title), stands as the first release from Fela Kuti's new Egypt 80 band. At this point, the compositions are still relatively tight and riff-heavy. The music is getting a bit more complex, but not so much as would be notable later. The album makes criticism of the lack of basic necessities for African citizens, despite a wealth at the time from oil deposits. Surprisingly in this album, there are no personal accusations made -- just general statements. The accompanying laid-back "Power Show" hearkens back to the lyrics of the '70s, wherein he simply mocks lower-grade officials. This time through, he makes fun of various civil servants flexing their authoritarian muscles for respect. The second included album is I.T.T., a direct attack upon the then-president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, and International Telephone and Telegraph head M.K.O. Abiola. The attacks were direct and to the point: These high level officials were in collusion with foreign business and exploiting the average African. Musically, one can note a small progression toward the deeper sound of the '80s, but nothing remarkable yet. These albums are perhaps less danceable than Shakara, less humorous than Gentleman, and less inflammatory than Authority Stealing, but they're enjoyable still. A poor Fela album is still better than 90 percent of good albums on the Western pop markets. BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED. | 1. ORIGINAL SUFFER HEAD 2. POWER SHOW 3. I.T.T. (PART 1 & 2)

Double LP album re-released on CD in 1994 by Victor Entertainment in Japan. Another wonderful double album of some of his best music. Lady has an irresistible groove and beat while Fela has a go at Nigerian women wanting Western fashion. In Shakara (Oloje) originally released in 1972 on LP he pokes fun at boasters who have no substance. FELA KUTI | V.I.P. - AUTHORITY STEALING | 547384-2 | CD | £ 10.00
Released in 1999 this is a double album but just two long songs. First comes V.I.P. part of a live performance recorded in Berlin in 1979. Unfortunately the other part was never released. Due to a disagreement with Fela the Afrika 70 band broke up after this and so this was their last recording. The second song is Authority Stealing which was released on LP in 1980. The wording on this album was a real go at Government corruption and Fela nearly got killed for it and was then jailed on trumped up charges. BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED. | 1. V.I.P. FELA KUTI | ZOMBIE | CELD6116 | CD | £ 7.50
This CD compilation re-issue was released in 1985 and made in the Netherlands. All three tracks have been culled from the original Coconut label LPs. Zombie from the Zombie LP with Mr Follow Follow as the second side, was released in Nigeria in 1977. Monkey Banana is from the LP Before I Jump Like Monkey Give Me Banana which was released in1975. The second side being Sense Wiseness. Everything Scatter was released in 1975 with Who No Know Go Know as the second side and it is a slightly shorter version. This made in the studio the album criticised the Nigerian government; and it is thought to have resulted in the destruction of his Kalakuta Republic by the military and the murder of Kuti's mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. Each of them takes the lead accompanied by Fela's fourteen strong band and an over the top chorus from seven of his wives. Ayers meanwhile plays vibes along with his seven strong band of which sax player Harold Land blows a blinder. The two tracks are 18'38 and 17'32 minutes long. | 1. 2000 BLACKS GOT TO BE FREE 2. Led I would think by Mike Ngassa this 1974 single on the Afrodisia label is ultra rare. Couldn't find anything on the web for title number or artist and even drew a blank in Afrodisia Discographies. Record was a bit crackly with a few clicks while the cover has Discotheque Beauregard Libreville Gabon stamped on it. Dearest in Heart is described as P/English Souccus and Uwa Di Egwu is described as Ibo Soccer Beat. Realy nice record with smooth vocals great guitaring and a belting brass line up so have a listen. Sold but FREE download available of both tracks on request on either .wav or .mp3 file. | 1. DEAREST IN HEART 2. UWA DI EGWU

GINGER BAKER (with Fela Kuti) | STRATAVARIOUS | ATCOSD7013 | LP | £ 0.00
Interesting and sought after album by Ginger Baker and Fela Kuti. The tracks are long, with a tight funky sound, and lots of cool keyboards by Fela (who also sings and plays percussion). One track features a cool percussion jam between Ginger Baker and Guy Warren, the enigmatic African percussionist who also recorded with his Soundz group in the UK. The track Tiwa is propelled by Fela's keyboards and is the highlight of the album. The album came about when Fela was in London making Fela's London Scene. He met up with drummer Ginger Baker and they made this album together in 1972. Fela Kuti teamed up with again with Ginger Baker to make Fela's Live with Ginger Baker album and Fela also got Ginger to produce his classic He Miss Road album for him. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. Gorgeous record from Haruna and his Apala Group. Magic drumming and sweet vocals all the way through. Like a lot of Nigerian albums the tracks don't finish. They just keep going for seventeen minutes each side. Condition is very good both record and sleeve. Except for a well stuck gold label on the back from the African Record Centre in Brooklyn New York which was still going in 2019 when I popped in to have a look around. I.K.DAIRO AND HIS BLUE SPOT BAND | IYA O YEMI | DWAPS2190 | LP | £ 60.00
Produced back in 1983 on the Afrodisia label comes this beautiful album from the renowned I.K. Dairo anf his Blue Spot Band. Like many albums of this period there are no gaps between the tracks, the music is continuous and it is rather dificult to say where one track ends and the next one starts. There are 6 tracks on side A and 5 on side B. Hopefully I have got the clips from the right places. Condition - The sleeve has a tiny bit of wear on the edges but I would describe it as mint condition knowing how the Nigerian pressing plants produced them. Side A is almost perfect while side B has a few very light clicks roughly about tracks 10-11. Not a scatch but a small pressing error. Still not to worry as if you buy this LP it will come with a perfect quality CD-R from my own collection. [11T/35M] ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. OBIRIPO 2. MOSE ORIMOLADE 3. JOSEPH BABALOLA 4. The soft voiced king of juju whispers his words to the sweetly played music of his band The African Beats. A whole mix of percussion is present but pride of place goes to the various talking drums who's conversations throb backwards and forwards across the stage. Sunny's four man backing chorus is just perfect as they accompany him without ever overshadowing him. There are a whole bunch of beautifully played guitars laying down their notes but its the gorgeous sound made by the pedal steel guitar which is so evocative of juju music that catches the ear the most. Even Jonah Williams's keyboards are played with panache when they manage to sneak in. Not to be missed without a doubt. ( Tracks not in any order as they are all great: E Dide E Mujo, Ara Ma Nfe Sinmi, Oshodi Oke, Orisun Iye, Ose Ose, Yoruba, Ope Oku, Dance Dance Dance, Iya Mi, Alashe L'aiye, Omonde O'mela, Enia L'asho Mi, Ode Le Alaga. ) [13T/53] NB. Lovely album by smooth as silk Kollington which he made back in 1993. Cover looks a little bit worn as you can see from the pics but the record isn't in bad condition. It has a fair bit of crackle and quite a few clicks in places but otherwise is quite playable. A bit of Cool Edit or Audition will give you a nice clean recording. The samples came from the middle of both sides so may not be the tracks shown as Kollington doesn't stop to change track. Love it. | 1. MO DUPE 2. OMO NIGERIA 3. ADANI TAN 4. ERE DE 5. LIJADU SISTERS | HORIZON UNLIMITED (RE) | DWAPS2089 | LP | £ 0.00
Superb album from the tree climbing twins. Whenever Kehinde and Taiwo Lijadu felt low down in spirit they indulged themselves in a childhood prank. They climbed the tallest nearest tree and watched the unlimited horizon. That's not the only trait they shared in common. They are identical twins who also share identical callings, habits, hobbies, a bank account and four children between them. They never tell which one of them is mother to which child. 'They are four children' They always said when asked. Some years ago they climbed a very tall tree and saw in the horizon unlimited, the path of their future. The elements were orchestrating sweet musical vibrations that hit the core of the very being of the twins. It was the climax of their long-standing yearning to become professional singers. After all, it was all in the family. Daddy played the piano and Granny played the guitar. They had enough inspirational heat in their veins to generate and power their interest and enthusiasm. Also influencing them were Aretha Franklin, I. K. Dairo, Miriam Makeba, Victor Olaiya, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and a host of other musicians both local and international. All of them together gave them the heat of their inspiration. [6T/26M] ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. ORERE - ELEJIGBO 2. ERORA 3. GBOWO MI 4. GBALO - ALOGBALO 5. COME ON HOME 6. NOT ANY LONGER

SHINA PETERS | ACE | CBSM1002 | TC | £ 0.00
Sir Shina Peters and his International Stars released their first album Ace also known as Afro-Juju Series 1 in 1989. The album, which was released by CBS Records of Nigeria and went double platinum. Produced by Laolu Akins it was a musical fusion between Juju and Afrobeat. This Afro juju musical style mixed a fast percussive beat with keyboards, saxophone and guitar. Some of the lyrics in the album especially in Ijo Shina were quite racy for that time. The album went on to win awards for Shina which included the artist and album of the Year at the Nigerian Musical Awards. Like many Nigerian albums there are no stops between tracks 1 - 6 and 7 -12. An absolutely superb album and I just loved the final track - see how many people and places outside Nigeria you can identify. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. AFRO - JU JU 2. JE KAJO 3. IJO SHINA 4. This was one of my favorite LP albums from Fela Kuti's renowned drummer. N.E.P.A. is the initials of the Nigerian Electric Power Authority or as it is known locally Never Expect Power Always. However there is plenty of Power here from the thudding Afrobeat drumming of Tony and the great brass section supplied by Bami, Eddie Tan Tan, Tunji Omoshebi and Nicky Norris. Apart from NEPA there was only one other track on the LP - WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSE (another one go open) but to make up for having only these two tracks, which by the way are both crackers, there is a stunning Dance Dub version of both of them. Some really lovely buttock grinding groove. The CD has had an extra track added entitled Olokun. | 1. N.E.P.A. (NEVER EXPECT POWER ALWAYS) 2. N.E.P.A. DANCE DUB 3. Nigeria in the 1970’s had one of the most prolific recording industries in Africa. The fusion of African rhythms and culture with jazz, funk, soul, and rock was a pan African phenomenon but nowhere was it more alive than in the cities and on the dancefloors of Nigeria. Afro Baby features twelve musical rarities and highlights the unique vision of some of Nigeria’s most talented musicians and producers who added their Afro slant to the genres that were dominating the western popular music charts. The burgeoning interest in the history of Afrobeat and Afro-funk continues and this collection presents some of the best examples of funky Afro music from Africa’s most populated nation.
