IFTIN BAND | THE AL-URUBA SESSIONS | OSTCD013 | CD | £ 15.00
Seven years in the making, the official retrospective of one of Somalia's most famous and beloved private bands, Iftin. Digitized from cassettes recorded between 1982 and 1987 at the legendary Al-Uruba hotel's secret studio and the jams for the masses performed in the basement of Somalia's national theater. Banaadiri rhythms from Somalia's south, Mogadishu's finest vocalists, Dhaanto reggae-like guitar licks, and smoldering brass blend seamlessly with the sounds of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to form one of rawest, most cosmopolitan eras of music anywhere. Iftin's Mogadishu is where the world's sounds begin and end. Hardcover Bookcase CD with 12-page booklet. BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED. | 1. AAWAY AXDIGII AYNU ISKU OGEYN - SHUKRI MUSSE 2. JAMIILA | SONGS FROM A SOMALI CITY | OMA107 | LP | £ 40.00
Released on the Original Music label back in 1987. The music on this album was all recorded in one town, Baraawe which is on the Somali coast about 120 miles south of the capital, Mogadishu. The musicians heard here played regularly together in various combinations. Like almost all African musicians, they were part-timers. Some were shoemakers. Two were soldiers (Africa has long had an amazing number of fine dance bands made up of police or army personnel). The main traditional instrument of Somalia is the 'ud', imported from Egypt or Lebanon and known locally as the 'kaban'. Another common instrument is the 'taruumbo', or flute. The one heard on several of these tracks was a homemade, end-blown version cut from a piece of plastic tubing. All the pieces they perform on this recording are love songs. Features Kuusow "Kurtunwaarey", Amin Xaaji Cusmaan, Cabdulaahi Iman "Zamir", Xasan Xaaji Maxamed, and Nuur Maxamed "Curuba". CONDITION BRAND NEW BUT NOT SEALED ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. MARYAM MURSAL | THE JOURNEY | CDRW70 | CD | £ 15.00
Duck - because when you put this one on things are going to fly. Explosive is is an understatement as Maryam launches her assault on your eardrums with devestating effect. No kidding - I needed oxygen after this and I was only listening to it. This her second album is a high-octane modern take on her Somalian roots, produced by Simon Emmerson (of Afro Celts fame) with Soren Kjaer Jensen, featuring guitars, sequencers and back-up vocals from Peter Gabriel, yet never straying far from its African origins. BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED. | 1. LEI LEI = I FEEL ALONE 2. KUFILAW = TAKE CARE 3. SOMALI UDIIDA CEB = SOMALIA, DON'T SHAME YOURSELF 4. SODEWOU =WELCOME 5. HAMAR = THE BIG CITY 6. QAX = REFUGEE 7.
