BIKIKA | MOBEMBO | E029591-4 | TC | £ 0.00
One of those albums that you can't quite define. Bikika and her group start out with a couple of soft and sweet 'Mayebo' tracks that will remind you somewhat of Tshala Muana but it then progresses into 'Soukous' proper. While still retaining their perfect vocal harmonies the group, generous throughout with the soukous style guitar riffing, mix in a fair bit of sax to spice things up. In fact the three tracks on side B are positively gorgeous. A real gem for guitar lovers.

BOPOL MANSIAMINA | BOUCHIRA | BM06 | TC | £ 0.00
Paris based Soukous guitarist Bopol on another stunning outing with this his latest album. Gorgeous in all departments but with his brilliant guitar skills absolutely outstanding. No big band sound on this one to drown out the equally gorgeous vocals. Its wonderful all through but the smooth vocal harmonies of Mahele and the guitar on Bamako Night are wonderful. Dancewise, Koumbe Trahison is going to take a heck of a lot of beating as will the title track. Superb.

Another smashing release from Bozi and L'Anti Choc which contains some gorgeous singing especially when the girls get in on the act as they do with stunning effect on 'Verite' and 'Va et Vient'. Rigo Star and Micha Brown's lead guitars shine throughout this bouncy and very lively album but they really start to sparkle when they shift into overdrive for the sebens. CHOC STARS A PARIS | LA NAISSANCE DE CHOC STARS DANS MOKILI NGONGA | FDB300026 | CD | £ 0.00
Well here is a strange one. The name on the front of the CD is - Tala Mbote Ya Mbura Matadi Roboti! Robota! Robote! - which is the same as LP CHOC 055 which was released in 1985. Tracks 4, 3, 2 and 1 are the 4 tracks on the LP but Mokili Cloche has been re-named Mokili Ngonga. The next 5 tracks are new additions which were released on the CD La Naissance De Choc Stars Dans Mokili Ngonga. Bit of a mistake there I think. Images below are CHOC-GAN 005 which it should be and FDB300026 which is what they put in the jewel case. Music is wonderful. CONDITION AS NEW BUT NOT SEALED | 1. MOKILI NGONGA 2. ISE MATUMONA 3. A great album with an overwhelming profusion of sparkling Congolese guitar riffs and really superb singing that's totally irresistible. It's had me leaping around the loft like a lunatic, much to the wife's annoyance but once you put this on there's no stopping you. OK OK, I'll turn it down and no, I haven't got a herd of buffalo up here with me! Oh no, here comes the seben on 'Ye Nde Nami' again, must tie myself to the chair....HELP!! BRILLIANT DANCE ALBUM.

Just the line-up alone makes this album a must for everyone who likes Soukous and especially guitars. How about, Alain Makaba, Awilo Longomba, Caen Madoka, Maika Munam, Miguel Yamba, Luciana, Abby Surya, Ballou Canta and Reddy Amisi. With that little lot getting together its no wonder there isn't a bad track on the album - brilliant guitaring throughout and pure dance floor magic. Big suprise was the wonderful styling given to the neo-traditional 'Siyo Siyo' and the title track - just gorgeous. When University student Domi gets together with Aurlus Mabele and Dom Louya there is only one thing that you could possibley get - a profusion of beautiful soukous guitar playing and vocals to match. Just listen to the riffing on 'Isabelle-Glah' or the vocals on 'Macy-Domingo'. What doesn't melt your heart will melt the soles off your shoes. Even the odd track out, 'Koya', has super sweet vocals and some lovely sax to make up for it's slower style. Definitely recommended.

GABY LITA BEMBO AND ORCH' STUKAS DU ZAIRE | KITA MATA ABC | RETRO18CD | CD | £ 0.00
Lita Bembo - the great showman of Congo-Zairean music - was one of the most inspirational musicians of the 'new generation' that stormed Kinshasa in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with his band Stukas du Zaire. His unique blend of impassioned Ekonda vocal styles and frenetic guitar patterns turned his compositions into instant hits and his eccentric stage antics and innovative dance routines endeared him to young and old alike. Vincent Luttman of www.nostalgieyamboka.net has lovingly compiled a CD of rare and righteous grooves from a modern master. The tracks date from 1974 to 1983, running in reverse chronological order.

Geo, a highly sought after Paris based session guitarist who has backed a host of big names now comes out with a solo album which he recorded at Studio Oubien in Bamako, Mali, hence the title. The superb guitar playing throughout the album is somewhat let down by the decidedly the worse for wear vocals on one track, 'Ali Mankiri', which must have been recorded after a hell of a binge on the local brew! Otherwise it's a delicious feast of soukous guitar from start to finish. Recommended.

GRAND KALLE ET L' AFRICAN JAZZ | 1958 - 59 - 60 VOL. 1 | CD36503 | CD | £ 0.00
This CD is the first volume of some of his hits between 1958 and 1960 and what a lovely album it is. It was compiled from two compilation LP's - Merveilles Du Passe Hommage Au Grand Kalle Grand Kalle et l'African Jazz Volumes 1 and 2. The records were released back in 1984 and this CD was released in 2006. They were perhaps the first full-time, professional band in what was then known as the Belgian Congo. Founded in 1953 by Joseph Kabasele Tshamala, popularly know as Grand Kalle. Some other well known members of the band include Dr. Nico, Tabu Ley Rochereau and Vicky Longomba. Talking of the girls, Jena Mandako, Odette Abby and Sylvie Aoun, wait till you hear them in action on 'Muchana', the zouk love song, it's an absolute cracker of a track. Syran Mbenza, Loko Massengo, Nyboma, Wuta Mayi, Bumba Massa, Rigo Star, Franco Luambo, Vicky Longomba and Edo Nganga. There's nothing either anachronistic or trendy about Kekele. They channel the Congolese Rumba of Franco's O.K. This is original, and it's thrilling.

A rather different sound from Congo D. R. as singer and likembe player Ngeleka Kandanda goes on tour to the U.S.A with his band. They play a variety of drums plus guitars and a bit of synth but up front is the wizard sound of Katombi Rigo's violin and Kandanda's likembe, which is like an mbira but here has the un-nerving sound of somebody stirring a bowl of wasps! At some point they left the D.R.C. for Zambia where they stayed for the next 3 years before moving on In the mid-90s to Zimbabwe. Their music is a more gritty and faster style of soukous which today call rumba and which draws inspiration from the music of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania. MBILIA BEL | BEL CANTO | STCD3037-38 | CDx2 | £ 0.00
When Tabu Ley Rochereau decided to add another singer to his retinue in 1981, he can't have anticipated how successful she would become. As he watched Mbilia Mboyo on a popular TV music show, tucked away on backing vocals for another act, perhaps he thought she could be just another singer that would join for a few years and then one day go, unmourned by a public always wanting what's next. If so, he was wrong. With her name changed to Mbilia Bel, they recorded the duet 'Mpeve Ya Longo'. It was an instant hit with the Kinshasa crowd and also in Nairobi, Kenya, where she made her concert debut as featured singer with 'Afrisa International'. By the middle of 1982, the buzz about Mbilia was a roar and she was hailed as the country's brightest new star. They went on to marry and, for Tabu Ley's new label, Genidia, record a string of hits that help define the sound of an era. And not just for central Africa. From those very earliest concerts, East Africa always held a passionate fan-base and Mbilia's recordings reached South, West and out into the African diaspora beyond. She also touched a nerve in the women of her audience and to this day there is something about Mbilia Bel that gains that audience's loyalty. However the partnership, indeed the marriage, between Mbilia and Tabu Ley lasted only until 1988, when they parted ways and Tabu Ley introduced his next female discovery, Faya Tess. Mbilia moved to Paris and then on to the States but, as fashions changed, so has her music. She has never quite found the same run of success as on those key recordings from the 80s. These 2CDs contain those tracks and tell that story. Crucial recordings of Mbilia Bel, the queen of Congolese music and one of the most popular pan-African stars throughout the 1980s selected from Tabu Ley's 'Genidia' label by Gerald Seligman with additional notes by Ken Braun, these recordings represent an artist at the peak of her career includes a bonus track, the hard-to-get single version of 'Mpeve Ya Longo' - the recording that started her career plus full-colour, 44-page booklet with detailed notes, lyric translations, a discography and rare photos.

Super vocals from Ballou Canta, Luciana De Mingongo and Shimita add the finishing touch to this wonderful set of tracks. Have a listen. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. LEDDY 2. NADY BLONDE 3. YALA 4. For a few years one of the hottest acts in Zaire of the early 1970s. Madjesi, a composition of Mario Matadidi Mabele, Loko Massengo 'Djeskain' and Saak 'Sinatra' Sakoul, the three prominent members of the band, made a joyful mix of Congolese music and soul music in the style of the then so popular James Brown. The actual tracks on the tape are not as listed on either the cassette or the different set listed on the inlay. Further info can be found on Frank Bessem's web site. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. Very nice album from Papa and the group with the title track being my favourite. This CD was released on the Ngyarto label and like many of their releases was obviously recorded from vinyl. There are clicks and a noticeable jump and background hiss in the last track. I also got this from Allan Moss. Thanks Nick. That's pretty interesting. Four tracks on the CD are the original Papa Wemba & Viva Musica 1986 LP, issued by Veve International (that's #3-6), the first two tracks come from the LP 'Hee!' by Papa Wemba & les Djamuskets de Paris, issued in 1982 on the Le Passport label (which apparently only issues two albums). The last track was a 1978 two part 45! That was by Orchestre Isifi, of which Papa Wemba was a member and issued on the Maillot Jaune (yellow shirt!) label. This CD is the only reissue of that 45. The label that made the compilation was Editions Plus de Paris. Nyogarto reissued it and, as usual, used the original company's catalogue number. So that all gives several opportunities for faults to get into the system. Thank you for that Allan and it also explains the double dropout in the middle of the last track. A bad join now repaired on my own CD-R. ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION | 1. DIDO SENGA 2. ZEA 3. SULIYA 4. KALISIA 5. BEAU GOSSE YA PARIS 6. SAHEL AFRICA 7. CHERIE MAZENA

Mwana Molokai (Mwana means master, Molokai is the region of Kinshasa where Viva La Musica started out) is a double CD compiled by Vincent Luttman presenting 18 of Papa Wemba's best recordings, made over a span of twenty years (1977 to 1997), during which he rose from cult following in Zaire to global stardom. It includes several rarities, never released outside their original 7in format. As well as Viva La Musica's extensive roll-call of musicians and vocalists, the tracks include contributions from Pepe Kalle, Koffi Olomide, Josky Kiambukuta, Wendo Kolosoy and Hector Zazou.

I thought his last album 'Foridoles' was going to be a hard one to follow but obviously not for Papa Wemba as this album is a total smash from start to finish. The guitar play of Dally Kimoko, Maika Munan and others is outstanding as their sparkling chords sweetly intertwine and fuse with the inovative keyboards and the mellow percussion. To top it all off there is the creme de la creme of Zaire's vocalists in Reddy Amisi, Gloria, Stino and of course the pure magic of Papa himself. SUPERB. A real stunner from Pepe with some of the most gorgeous guitars you're ever going to hear. This is what Congolese music is all about, magic vocals from Popi, Bidha Soleil, Papytex Matolu and Pepe singing some of the sweetest songs I've heard in a long, long time. Absolutelly fantastic on all four tracks, they could have made it fourty tracks and it still wouldn't have been long enough for music with this sort of quality. Classic from start to finish.

SOUKOUS BA CONGO | ZONGA ZONGA | SBC001 | CD | £ 0.00
Soukous Ba Congo is led by King Bell who hails from the Congo while the rest of the group come from countries as diverse as Chile, Japan, Australia (where the group are based), Southern Sudan and last but not least Congo D. R.. This captivating album is built around the superb soft soukous guitar riffs of Luis Figueroa and Grant Taylor backed by the sharply defined drumming of Malcolm Neate. Into this musical tapestry King Bell has woven his gentle and enchanting vocals with the precision learnt during his time with the Angolan National Ballet. While the music is firmly rooted in soukous the group are not slow to add a few branches from other musical backgrounds nearer to home, cop a load of Luis at work on Bailar. A terrific album to dance to and when the tootsies are tired out its still great to listen to. Smashing call and response vocals come booming out from lead singers Mbani Abel Nsita and Matuti Djo Roy backed by the sweetly sung harmonies of Ali Mabou, Dinganga, Jean-Claude Nembale and K. W. Mizos. The pounding beat of the mixed drum/percussion line-up is well complimented by Umba Sorozo's synth/harmonica and guitar playing. Although it still has the rural sound of 'Swede Swede' the addition of guitars and synth gives the album a much more interesting and danceable sound. You definitely ain't going to get bored with music as fast and hot as this. (The F.T.Index: Maman, Lola, Mopende, Mokili Ebebi)
STAFF BENDA BILILI | TRES TRES FORT | CRAW51 | CD | £ 0.00
Staff Benda Bilili are a gang of paraplegic musicians based around the grounds of the dilapidated zoo in Kinshasa. This was their first release and the inlay reveals that front man, Ricky Likabu was and still is an entrepreneur who sells cigarettes and booze from his tricycle outside the city night clubs. Other band members include guitarist, arm-wrestling champion Coco Ngambali and 17-year-old Roger Landu, who plays a one-string electric lute that he built himself. The drummer plays a mean plastic armchair would you believe. While their producer's Mac Book was powered illegally from a refreshment bar in the zoo. Traditional rumba rock with a bit of Cuban influence and James Brown thrown in for good measure which produces a light hearted and addictive sound. Tracks 2 and 6 will confirm it was recorded out and about as the chorus of the frogs will confirm. The group's name tells you to look beyond appearances and ignore the band's disabilities. TABU LEY ROCHEREAU | THE VOICE OF LIGHTNESS | STCD3027-28 | CDx2 | £ 0.00
The golden years from the very early 60s through to the late 70s when he wrote some of his finest songs and gave some of his greatest performances. A time when he was as happy to write jingles for OMO soap powder (Savon Omo - CD1), as he was unafraid to experiment with extended workouts and let his band have its way (e.g. Adeito - CD2 - parts 1 and 2 reunited here for the first time since they were recorded). These 2CDs are a confection of African pop at its very best; melodic, vibrant, beautifully crafted and while well aware of what was going on in the rest of the world - not least the rest of Africa - securely anchored in that mainstream of African music, Congolese rumba. And, above it all, floats the voice of Tabu Ley Rochereau, the voice of lightness. includes hits plus rare recordings never before released on CD full-colour, 44-page booklet with fascinating and detailed notes plus rare photos.

The new wave which swept over Kinshasa's music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s went on to flood the whole of Africa with the style of guitar music now known as soukous. Between the era of the great orchestras and the new wave bands of the Zaiko Langa Langa family existed a pivotal group whose influence is legendary, yet whose pioneering work has hardly ever been available outside Congo. Thu Zahina was the group responsible for that upsurge and here are eleven outstanding hits which proivide the missing link between the classic 'Congo music' and the new rumba. This is rumba on the cusp, as the stately orchestration of the big band style is infiltrated by the raw groove of roots and funk, before being overwhelmed by an orgy of guitar licks.

Recorded in Kenya back in the 60's and 70's this early rumba compilation is pure magic. There isn't any point in doing an 'F.T.Index:' for music like this, it's all gorgeous. Features Tu M'as Decus Chouchou and Kiri Kiri Mabina Ya Sika by Dr Nico, Nalinga Ya Ngai Cherie by Don Pierro, Mabala Ya Kinshasa by Samy, Ndeko Na Ngai Ikeba by Johnny Bokelo, Mado by Bombenga, Tambola Na Mokili by M. Bolingo Ya Telephone by Fidele Zizi and L'orchestre Los Nichelos provides a silky smooth intro to Dix Makuta from Franco and Orchestre O.K. Jazz. A real cracking track with something for everyone. Kiri Kiri Mabina Ya Sika from the great Dr. Nico come next with his Orchestre African Fiesta Sukisa. Following on is Marie Helena with Simaro taking over the reigns of O.K. Jazz for some great singing set to zinging guitar with a fair bit of brass. Over to the flip side and Ndeko Na Ngai Mokili introduces the lively guitar and velvet vocals of Johnny Bokelo and Orchestre Congo 68 De Bokelo. Maseke Ya Meme from Bavon Marie Marie and Orchestre Negro Success is next and deliverers with a perfection that would be hard to equal now over 30 years later. Johnny Bokelo's second track Tambola Na Mokili is also a real bit of magic in both the vocal and guitar departments to say nothing of its mean horn line up. Last is Marie Suzie from Franco and O.K. Jazz to provide a beautiful ending to a set of wonderful tracks from what I always reckon on as the golden age of African Music. [8T/43M]

One of Zaire's top bands and one of his best releases ( so much better than their leader Emeneya's dodgy solo crossover disc 'Everybody'). Guitarist Auguy Lutula's 'Dandy' was the big hit off Reponse Polo-Kina but for me even better is El Chato's 'Ayite Sungu', vocally led by Malembe Chant surely one of Zaire's most under-rated singers. A classy band with a superb vocal front line have produced here a superb album. (MS - Sterns). ON CD-R IN MY COLLECTION
WAL JUNIOR With Shaba Kahamba AND Popolipo | BI OMODE | 29306 | TC | £ 0.00
Never heard of Wal Ibrahim? Don't worry, he's probably not heard of you either! However its sheer delight from young Cameroonian Wal Ibrahim who has taken the high energy Makossa rhythm of Cameroon and mixed it with tasty Zaire soukous guitar licks and Paris pop/zouk vocals. Guitarist Popolipo (regular member of Zaiko Langa Langa Familia Dei and session player for Koffi Olomide) is joined by Caien Mandoka and Shaba Kahamba from Tabu Ley's Afrisa and between them they handle the soukous guitars. The makozouk instrumentation is taken care of by Camille Bretere, Guy N'Sangue and Wal's keyboard. Good vocals and horns with a nice variety of influences makes this a true Pan-African release. The guitar playing on the title track is just out of this world. (The F.T.Index: Bi Omode, Missie and Save Mache) Thanks to Martin Sinnock for help with this write-up.
WENGE MUSICA | KIN E BOUGE | BMP000159-2 | CD | £ 0.00
The best of 1990-91 and it certainly is, great music with plenty of guitar and super smooth vocals backed up by a great horn section. "Kin E Bouge" is great but I still prefer "Kaskin" with its lovely vocals and tinkling guitars. Guaranteed to set your feet flying with all tracks especially the last track "Eve Sukali". Released in Paris where part of the group is now based it swept through the nightclubs of West Africa. This album sees a departure from the style of the 90-91 album that was featured in a previous newsletter. A harder and more percussion orientated sound that's perfectly matched to the sharp edged guitar playing that sets the mood this time round. A great album all round, dance your feet off, drool over the guitars or just listen to those sweet vocals. Whatever you want it's got it.
WENGE MUSICA B.C.B.G. | BOUGER BOUGER | NACD9401 | CD | £ 10.00
Formed in July 1981 by a bunch of college students it wasn't until 1988 the 'Bon Chic Bon Genre' boys made their first recording. For two years the album 'Mulolo' held Wenge at the top of the Kinshasa charts. So successful was this session that they re-cut four of the songs live for a cassette only release 'Wenge Live', not to be confused with 'Wenge En Live' release by offshoot outfit 'Wenge Aile Paris'. The masterly 'Mulolo' session has never before received a proper European distribution and therefore it is of major importance that this album, re-titled 'Bouger Bouger' has now become available. Six songs including three of their in-concert sensations: 'Bakolo Budget', J.P. Mpiana's excellent title track 'Mulolo', and Werrason's 'Nicky D'. The sound is noticeably leaner than on their 1991 hit 'Kin E Bouge' with the voices of Werrason, J.P. Mpiana and Blaise Bula leading the session and co-founder Didier Masela's bass and guitarist of the year in 1989 Alain Makaba. Makaba's fluid crystaline lead lines are a revelation on this recording and if anything, combined with his subtle and sparing keyboard work, surpass his later musical achievements. It is no wonder that Wenge became the darlings of the new generation of Kinshasa bands to challenge the established order. Their performance here exudes a stunning youthful exuberance : Classy harmonies, devastating musical progressions and six immaculate titles. (MS) WENGE MUSICA became the darlings of the month in Britain in 1991 following a BBC appearance and a minor hit record with "Kin E Bouge." But their 1988 album Bouger Bouger never saw a release outside of Africa until now. This is streamlined soukous from Zaire, right on the cusp of the big change-over to higher and higher tech, with sweet ensemble vocals, fat bass and those shimmering electric guitar lines that define the style. In fact, it's Alain Makeba's guitar solos and fills that really define this recording. He sets a spark to every vocal line and his solos are crisp, almost austere in their melodic simplicity. You still have to get past the inevitable low budget synthesizers so hip in Kinsasha at the time, but the rest of the ensemble is so lush and wonderful that it is a minor chore. If you are a fan of soukous masters like the families Zaiko, then this is for you. (rootsworld.com) CONDITION BRAND NEW BUT NOT SEALED. | 1. MULOLO 2. FISOL 3. DODO LA ROSE 4. AMOI NICKY 'D' 5. In 1970 a group of high-school students from KInshasa inaugurated the 'new wave' of Congo-Zairean popular music which became known to the world as soukous. Zaiko Langa Langa set a new direction for the hottest dance music in Africa, weaving their magic through voice, rhythm and and mesmerising guitars. In 1976 they brought their dynamic act to Ghana where they recorded some of their most enduring hits. More than just an historic collection this album is a celebration of the best in energising dance music. Above details are from the the back of the CD which is a long time favorite of mine.
